South Korea Responds Privately to USFK Commander’s Dagger Remarks

The criticism seems overblown, but this is typical Chinese behavior to intentionally overreact if they can cause tensions between the U.S. and an ally:

South Korea has delivered its position to the United States over the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) commander’s recent controversial remarks that likened South Korea to a “dagger” in Asia, according to presidential officials Saturday.

In a recent podcast interview hosted by the U.S. Army War College, Brunson described South Korea as “the dagger in the heart of Asia,” prompting criticism from the Chinese Embassy in Seoul, which said the remarks “crossed the line.”

National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, the defense ministry and the foreign ministry have delivered the country’s position over the remarks through respective diplomatic and security channels, according to Cheong Wa Dae.

Although a Cheong Wa Dae official declined to elaborate on the government’s position regarding Bruson’s remarks, security watchers say the message was likely that of regret.

“(We) are aware of Commander Brunson’s recent public remarks, and there are communications between South Korea and the United States on various pending issues at various levels,” the official said.

You can read more at the link, but I would guess the ROK government’s response was something like that they know this criticism is stupid from the Chinese, but that they would appreciate it if the USFK commander could be more careful with his comments to avoid more stupid criticism in the future.

Tech Rally Causes Korean Stock Market to Open at a Record High

It is pretty amazing how stock markets continue to set new highs despite the oil disruptions in the Middle East:

South Korean stocks opened at a fresh record high Monday as investor appetite for tech shares helped offset uncertainty surrounding negotiations between the United States and Iran over a peace agreement.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 120.03 points, or 1.42 percent, to 8,596.18 as of 9:15 a.m., continuing its upward momentum after opening at a fresh high.

The KOSPI closed at a record high of 8,476.15 on Friday.

South Korean Soldier Hospitalized for Two Weeks After Being Forced to do 100 Pushups

I have never heard of something like this before. Who doing too many pushups can land you in the hospital for two weeks?:

A soldier at a front-line military unit in Gangwon Province developed rhabdomyolysis, a severe muscle condition, after a superior allegedly forced him to continue doing push-ups despite repeated requests to stop.

Authorities from the Ministry of National Defense said they are investigating the incident following a formal complaint from the victim’s family, who allege abuse of authority, abuse and assault.

The episode occurred March 9 during a physical training session when a company commander ordered soldiers to complete a run and 100 push-ups. The victim was exercising with a fellow soldier when the offender intervened. At approximately 15 repetitions, the sergeant allegedly pushed on his back, criticized his form and forced him to continue doing push-ups.

The soldier explicitly asked to stop three times, telling his superior, “I’m too exhausted, sergeant,” “I don’t think this is right” and “I don’t think I can do this because I’m exhausted.” The sergeant ignored his requests, forcing the victim to complete nearly 100 repetitions before the soldier began breathing heavily and stopped.

The soldier experienced immediate arm pain and sleep disturbances. He visited the medical unit two days later, where he passed dark urine after receiving an intravenous drip. A blood test at the Armed Forces Pocheon Hospital showed his creatine kinase (CK) level had reached 40,000 U/L. The normal range is 50 to 200 U/L.

At his family’s request, the victim underwent a second test at a civilian university hospital, where his CK level surged to 77,380 U/L. Medical staff diagnosed him with severe rhabdomyolysis alongside symptoms of kidney failure and arrhythmia. He required two weeks of inpatient care and continues outpatient treatment.

“If they had stopped when he asked them to stop, this would not have happened,” the family said, demanding a thorough investigation and punishment for those responsible.

Despite Clear Evidence Iran Denies It Attacked South Korean Ship

It should not be surprising that the Iranian regime is willing to blatantly lie despite smoking gun evidence they committed the attack:

Two missiles were fired. The first warhead failed to explode, while the second struck the vessel’s stern hull.

Following the briefing, the foreign ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador to South Korea, Saeed Koozechi, to protest the attack and demand accountability from Tehran.

However, the Iranian envoy denied his country’s involvement in the strike. Speaking to reporters, he said he was personally sorry for the incident but insisted that Iran was not responsible and had never been involved in the attack.

The Iranian Embassy has yet to release an official statement regarding the findings.

Iran must clarify its position on the Korean foreign ministry’s briefing. Tehran’s silence will only fuel speculation and suspicions that it is hiding something.
