ROK Military Considering Banning iPhones, But Allowing Samsung Phones

This sounds like a way for the Korean government to reduce Apple’s marketshare in Korea by imposing this ban because any smartphone is a possible recording device not just Apple phones:

South Korea’s military is considering a comprehensive ban on iPhones in military buildings due to increasing concerns about possible leaks of sensitive information through voice recordings, according to multiple military sources on Tuesday.

The sources, a group of ranking officers who wished to speak on condition of anonymity, said that the Air Force headquarters released an internal announcement on the military’s intranet server on April 11, instructing a complete prohibition on any device capable of voice recording and which do not permit third-party apps to control inherent functions, effective June 1, with “iPhones” cited as items subject to the ban.

According to the document, the decision to ban iPhones in the military came from joint meetings held by the headquarters of the Army, Navy and Air Force, located at Gyeryongdae in South Chungcheong Province.

As usual, GI Korea.. lol. This is Korea’s version of the IRA bill? (I truly wish).

Now here’s why iPhone is getting banned – because Apple refuses to allow security applications to be installed.

Explained by Sammobile

The primary concern is not because the iPhone has some inherent security flaw, but that it doesn’t comply with the restrictions imposed by the National Defense Mobile Security, a mobile device management app that military personnel are required to have on their devices.

When this app is activated, it restricts many features of the smartphone, such as the camera, Wi-Fi, microphone, tethering, and more. However with the exception of the camera, Apple doesn’t allow third-party apps to control the iPhone’s native features, so the app can’t restrict the iPhone’s USB, microphone, tethering, and other features.

This security app was released by the Ministry of National Defense in 2013 to reduce the possibility of confidential information being leaked from its headquarters. It was initially required only for officers and public officials working at the ministry but has since been extended to all military personnel.

Android places no such feature control restrictions which is why Samsung devices can be used as normal even as iPhones get banned. The iPhone ban is reportedly on a trial basis with a wider implementation expected within the next couple of months.

“The primary concern is not because the iPhone has some inherent security flaw, but that it doesn’t comply with the restrictions imposed by the National Defense Mobile Security,”

Fake news.

It turns out the real reason is because South Korea is very concerned about maintaining readiness in the face of possible war and they recognize the high level of risk involved with a military full of wussy Apple fanbois.
