South Korea Detains Vessels Suspected of Violating Sanctions with North Korea

This seems a weird way for North Korea to ship something to Russia via ship from China when both North Korea and China share a land border with Russia:

South Korea has seized a stateless vessel that allegedly engaged in activities in violation of U.N. sanctions in waters off the country’s south coast, security sources said Wednesday.

The 3,000-ton cargo ship DEYI, reportedly en route to Russia from North Korea via China, was captured in waters off Yeosu around Saturday, they added.

Thirteen were aboard the ship, including a Chinese captain and other Chinese and Indonesian crewmembers.

South Korea’s Coast Guard is said to have moved the ship and docked it in waters off the southeastern port of Busan after the crewmembers refused orders to stop the vessel.

Sanctions uses to be pretty clear.

The Good Countries isolated the Bad Countries which did bad things to the Good Countries.

But it is growing increasingly unclear what countries are “good” and what countries are “bad”.

One could say Israel is clearly engaging in terrorism while North Korea is not hurting anyone. Yet America supplies Israel to continue these actions.

One reason Russia invaded Ukraine was because Ukraine engaged in terrorism by shelling areas populated by Russian-speakers. Ukraine is still shelling civilian population centers with no military targets over the border in Russia. Yet sanctions are against Russia and not Ukraine.

Sanctions suddenly lose their legitimacy when their purpose and goals are not clearly defined and they are not applied equally.

Suddenly, “enforcing sanctions” against shipping looks more like piracy and active involvement to influence the outcome of a war than any sort of moral crusade.

This needs further consideration.

Korea: Please don’t get involved. Just sell to the highest bidder and let me enjoy prosperity in peace.
