“He is not legally compensated because he is an illegal resident. The uncomfortable truth is that he lived illegally in another owner’s land a long time ago. Like Guryong Village in Gangnam. A.K.A 알박기. That’s why he couldn’t win the court.”

This story didn’t ring quite true… as Koreans have a rather strong sense of justice about such things.

I have no idea what is right and wrong here.

I just suspected the story had to be more complex than it was being presented as.

In the US, failing to evict after a certain amount of time (various states range from 2 to 20 years) results in adverse possession. So if you go on vacation for a couple of years, it is possible for some bum to legally steal your house by living in there while you’re gone. Another semi common issue of adverse possession tends to happen with ownership of large amounts of land. Farmers and ranchers sometimes find some bum living in some hidden area, but because a certain amount of time passed they can’t reclaim ownership.

In this regard, South Korea has stronger property rights which is sort of surprising.
