ROK Military to Improve Food Menus for Its Troops

It will be interesting to see how much these regulations will improve morale for troops eating in ROK military chow halls. I have eaten in ROK Army chow halls before and the food wasn’t bad, but if I had to eat it every day with no variety I can understand why Soldiers would complain:

South Korea’s Defense Ministry on Monday announced a new food service modernization program for this year that meets more of soldiers’ preferences, so that they could enjoy more varied options at barracks starting from the next month.

The new plan seeks to end the previous military policy of providing meals to around 500,000 enlisted soldiers based on standardized menus and ingredients that were unilaterally imposed by the military authorities without considering soldiers’ predilections for food.

South Korean troops have so far designed a daily menu to meet the allocated amount of food ingredients that must be supplied to soldiers. For instance, the existing food service program mandates that a soldier should consume 8.84 grams of white radish, 1.54 grams of green pumpkin, and 3.41 grams of napa cabbage per day.

But the new policy — which will be implemented this April — enables military units to independently select menus to reflect the preferences of enlisted soldiers as long as meal plans cover their nutritional needs and are within budget.

The South Korean military will also renounce its mandatory consumption rate of livestock products. For instance, troops are currently required to allocate 15 percent of pork loin and 22 percent of pork foreleg when stir-frying pork.

But according to the new program, the units will be able to freely choose livestock products within the budget.

The frequency of providing unflavored milk, which is not popular among soldiers, will be reduced. The military will instead supply flavored milk products, soybean milk and juice to soldiers to reflect their preferences.

The South Korean troops will also be able to provide various brands of processed food products, including tofu, sugar, salt and cooking oil. Military units do not have the option to choose brands as only a single company is selected as a provider.

Well, it’s a good start… as long as they are still teaching the troops more about how to kill people and break things than using the right pronouns…

What one calls someone else then speaking in the third person is not important.

500,000 enlisted troops… that’s way too much, especially focused on infantry.

In 1970, over one million new births.
In 2000, that number was only 400,000 of new babies.
In 2022, that number halved again to only 200,000 new births.

The maths show, there is no way that South Korea can keep continuing to keep over half a million draftees. That number has to be cut at least by half unless they start recruiting middle-aged men.

Korea is an advanced country.

What about some genetic engineering so babies had 4 arms?

They could then hold two rifles.

…four, actualy, if they were just doing area suppression.

This could cut the military in half.

…maybe more, as all soldiers could do area supression and the air force guys with genetically engineered wings could take out the enemy with air superiority.

You live in the past.

Some people just want South Korea defenseless. I tend to call them chinabots; but it might just be naive incels with no understanding of History.

The one who wants South Korea defenseless is you setnaffa.

You do not trust the South Korean military to defend your “friends” and “relatives” in South Korea and would prefer that the USFK be the leading protector of South Korea, instead of the South Korean military.

Which means South Korea will be weak, defenseless, and dependent on the US for its security.

Well actually KM talked about the decreasing birth rate in Korea which is an issue here and will certainly affect the Korean military’s manning plans, which I might add are heavily dependent on cheap manpower.

No “chinabot” material, I’m afraid.

The way to overcome this is to apply technology to the fullest such as unmanned systems.

However despite some efforts, Korea seems to be lagging in this area.

How many soldiers does North Korea have? How many does South Korea require?

Each soldier only requires one incapacitating or fatal wound. We’re all still Mark I Mod. 1 humans, after all.

The so-called “Peace Dividend” after the fall of the USSR was a blatant lie, possibly because leftist politicians underestimate the stabilizing force applied to regions (like the Balkans, for example) by totalitarian regimes. Perhaps it was intentional. Doesn’t really matter. Now we have more Little wars, nearly all asymmetrical

South Korea needs enough of an army to fight North Korean forces possibly augmented by forces from Russia, China, Africa, Iran, and/or Pakistan. Yes. Read your history.

And they need to assume their traditional allies may be distracted by a Chinese move on Taiwan, supplemented by additional distractions from Guadalcanal and other small nations under their control.

Dropping the size of the military as the chinabot suggests would not be wise until the missile defenses and enhanced weapons are already in place. Can’t fight today’s war with weapons you might have in five years.
