No need to, China got all the data they need.

What a ridiculous question.

I really think there are a lot of mental defectives masquerading as journalists.

There are more questions than answers. Anybody have some ideas?

– Is it really a big deal to let it finish crossing America. Meaning: Is there any info it can really get… or, better, can we give it fake info?

– Is it better to shoot it down over shallow water where it is easier to recover? It is easier to monitor its fall location from a boat, both visually and radar. Sonar and magnatrometers work really well, especially on a featureless bottom.

– was there no other way than to use a $400,000 missile?

– what did we witness? It looks like the missile hit the payload or the location where the payload connects rather than targeting the balloon. It would seem blowing out the top of the balloon would make recovery much easier and act as a parachute to reduce damage to the payload.

Anybody have any insight? Anybody want to speculate?

CH, I think that was asked and answered at the last WH Press Conference.

Unnamed Reporter: “What is 2 plus 2?”

KJP: “Well as you know, and as we’ve stated before, this administration has stated how transparency is important, so we’re going to be transparent and when it comes to 2 plus 2, as you know there’s a process to this so we’re going to let the process play out and be as transparent as we’ve stated that we’re going to be.”

CH, the balloon was at 64000 feet up when it was shot. Trying to use the gun at that altitude was a lot more tricky and less likely to be successful.
I still don’t understand why they didn’t shoot it down when it was over Montana…but as far as recovery I know someone who had to bail out in that exact area and they were able to find everything (jet and debris) within 48 hours.

Liz,

Why do you think the missile hit the payload connection area, allowing the payload to freefall as well as opening the balloon, instead of just targeting the balloon?

I asked Mike that (we listened to the audio a couple of days ago, it was on youtube). He said he doesn’t know, but from what he does know, whatever the reason it was carefully thought out in advance.
Most likely Raytheon was contacted and their engineers did some equations.
