People enjoy nighttime swimPeople on a beach in Sokcho, 210 kilometers east of Seoul, take a nighttime dip in the sea on July 29, 2019, as temperatures hovered near 30 C at 9 p.m. (Yonhap)
These beaches use to be closed at night to prevent infiltration and the ROK Army patrolled them. Now I guess commie moon doesn’t care.

Why is the water green? I thought the “East Sea” had cleaner water than the “West Sea”. Plus the scene pictured above looks like the opening scene from one of those Syfy network flicks about mutant piranhas…
Who has been to the east coast as a tourist? What’s it like? We had planned to go in 2016 before I got sick. It’ll be in our plans when we’ve gotten back up to speed.

I’ve been to the east coast as a tourist. My wife has family in Sokcho, and it is the town her mom’s family settled in after coming south when the Korean War broke out.
There is quite a bit to do there, depending on what you like. Besides staying at family, we also checked into the Damyung Delpino Resort and Golf Club (I think. it’s been a while, but the pic on Google looks familiar enough)
We’ve been to the beach, to the submarine, and I want to go to the Haesindang Park one day now that our kids aren’t with us.
Did a bit of fishing, lots of swimming, but no snorkeling of SCUBA diving. I didn’t have my rig last time, and my tank is WAY overdue for hydro. I can rent tanks of course, but I should probably go dig out my dive log. I’m terrible for keeping my logs up to date…
Oh, if you’re into fish, the fish market makes some extremely fresh sashimi. That was my usual motivation to get up and ride 200km in a day on the bicycle.

C’mon, setnaffa! Don’t you know “green” means “envioronmently friendly”. Oh, and actually getting into the water?…Blech!

JohnHenry, what happened?!? We’re agreeing completely!!! LOL
Yeah. Swimming in the ocean is one thing. Climbing into water crowded with so many strangers is an invitation to involuntarily share body fluids with people who may not be hygienic… even if the water is normally okay…
