Gordon Chang Gives Address to the National Press Club On South Korean Government’s Attacks on Freedom of Speech

Via a reader tip comes a video of journalist and author Gordon Chang recently giving a speech to the National Press Club about the Moon administration’s attacks on the freedom of speech in South Korea.  He also discusses the current security situation on the Korean peninsula.

For those that have been reading the ROK Drop none of Mr. Chang’s comments should come as a surprise.  The Moon administration since taking office has made it a priority to consolidate control of the national media outlets, jailing political opponents, and the silencing of media critics.

Also I would like to add, Moon is a son of North Korean refugees from the Korean War. If he had grown in North Korea, there is a high chance that Moon and his family could have been put into a gulag or starved to death. It is really unfortunate that he is the President of South Korea.

But once his regime falls, Moon will surely be put on trial for treason. He and his men are going to get what’s coming to them. What he has done against others, he will face the same.

“Jailing political opponents”? “Silencing the media”? Boy do you know how to exaggerate. For starters, let’s address your allegation of shaking down political opponents, which refers to the the trial and recent conviction of former president, Lee Myeong-bak (2MB). For the record, 2MB’s legal problems date back to way before President Moon ever became president — specifically his role in a major stock fraud case in 2000 and the malfeasance of the prosecutor’s office in dismissing charges of bribery, embezzlement and fraud levied against him back in 2008.

This all came to a head when a new prosecutor announced charges for him based on new evidence uncovered in early 2018, leading to his subsequent trial and conviction on October 5, 2018 and a prison sentence of 15 years, which he is currently serving. Despite your insinuation and false assertion, the executive branch neither controls or influences the judiciaries decisions, so the Moon government had nothing to do with 2MB’s prosecution or conviction. That he was convicted and imprisoned was solely 2MB’s comeuppance for his own history of theft, graft and bribery, all leading to his own undoing. There was nothing political about it, and to suggest there was indicates a gross miscomprehension and misunderstanding of Korean politics and current events.

You also allege that the Moon administration is attempting to “silence critics,” i.e., censor the press. Bollocks. Again, you are making baseless and mendacious accusations that lack any evidence. The issue at hand is not that Moon is allegedly reigning in free speech or attempting to abridge the power of the press, which ironically is exactly what the PGH government stands guilty of. The issue is regarding baseless name-calling and political epithets hurled at Korea’s Prime Minister, Lee NaK-yon, during a recent state visit to Viet Nam to commemorate the passing of their late president, Tran Dai-Quang.

After attending Tran Dai-Quang’s state funeral in Hanoi, PM Lee visited the stilt house of famed leader, Ho Chi Minh, where he wrote in the visitors’ book at the compound that he felt “humble” before the “great” Vietnamese leader. When it was reported in Korean media, this automatically incurred the wrath of conservatives back home, including former Viet Nam veterans, who called him a “commie” in social media and other press outlets. Incensed, PM Lee suggested that a new law be introduced to delimit “fake news” and recommended that the government take action against those outlets that spread it. This, however, is not the same thing that PGH did when she tried to censure the press and go after individual journalists – especially liberal ones – by prosecuting them for alleged acts of defamation that criticized her and her administration. On the contrary, the Korean media, especially liberal and moderately left-leaning media, have enjoyed a resurgence of sorts under the current administration. That the Prime Minister criticized a few conservative journalists for calling him a “commie” while recommending tougher laws against fake news is neither unseemly nor an abrogation of free speech in Korea. For pete’s sakes, get your facts straight.

“Despite your insinuation and false assertion, the executive branch neither controls or influences the judiciaries decisions, ”

The executive branch also appointed new judges recently.

HK, go home. We just have enough of you jongbuk Moonslam fanatic excuses.
If North Korea is ever successful in getting their useful idiots like you to hand over South Korea to them, you and others like you would be the first ones to be sent to the death camps in the north, you dope.

Even in the company of Tara O’s posts, this is likely the most important rokdrop post of the year. Gordan Chang is dead-on on every point. The SK people are not getting this news. I rarely watch a 20 min video, but this is a must watch.

Flyingfucktard – do you have anything intelligent to say, never mind anything useful to add to this discussion? Your childish ad hominems aside, it appears you know absolutely zilch about Korea, politics, or Korean current events, so why don’t you just do yourself a favor and admit it? I will gladly tutor you and teach you the A-to-Z’s to bring you up speed, b/c son, you can’t handle the truth the way you’re going at it.

“you can’t handle the truth the way you’re going at it.”

I don’t think so. It’s the Moon Jae-in government who can’t handle the truth by trying to use the fake news law to silence free speech. Pro-North Korea jongbuk Koreans are the ones who can’t handle the truth.
