President Trump Says Now “Isn’t the Right Time” to Ease North Korean Sanctions

President Moon’s goal was to get sanctions relief for North Korea and it appears he got President Trump to at least consider some relief in the future:

President Donald Trump’s meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in comes amid uncertainty over whether the leader of North Korea is considering backing out of nuclear negotiations or restarting nuclear and missile tests.
Trump, in his first meeting with Moon since the unsuccessful U.S. summit with Kim in Hanoi, said the U.S. wants to keep economic sanctions in place to pressure Kim to denuclearize. But Trump said he retains good relations with Kim and didn’t rule out a third summit or taking steps to ease food or other shortages in the repressive nation.
“We want sanctions to remain in place,” Trump said Thursday at the White House. “I think that sanctions right now are at a level that’s a fair level.”
Moon, for his part, has called for an easing of sanctions, including those holding back joint economic projects between North and South Korea. But he didn’t speak to the sanctions issue as he and Trump spoke with reporters at the start of their talks.

Trump said he would favor easing those sanctions at the right time but added: “This isn’t the right time.” He said he was open to discussing smaller steps, such as helping to ease North Korea’s humanitarian problems, but that, in general, the U.S. wants sanctions to remain.
“There are various smaller deals that maybe could happen,” Trump said.

Illegal Immigrant Prostitute Causes AIDS Scare in South Korea

I can only imagine how many people must have been exposed to the AIDS virus from this sex worker:

An illegal immigrant in her 40s, who worked at a massage parlor in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, was diagnosed with AIDS just days before she died of pneumonia and other complications April 3.

The woman was hospitalized March 26 and diagnosed with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) April 1, according to the public health centers in Pohang, Tuesday.

She reportedly visited Seoul and Busan for treatment.

Police investigated the massage parlor and its customers. But health officials and police are struggling to establish how many people she had sexual contact with.

The Air Force’s 8th Fighter Wing is emerging as a symbol of South Korea’s growing independent military capabilities, with its combat fleet consisting only of domestically developed warplanes, officials said Sunday.

The unit in Wonju, Gangwon, has two operators of the FA-50 fighter – the 103rd Fighter Squadron and the 203rd Fighter Squadron – and the 237th Tactical Control Squadron running the KA-1 airfield control aircraft.

The FA-50 is a light-attack fighter based on the design of the T-50 trainer jet manufactured by the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the country’s sole aircraft maker.

Armed with AIM-9, AGM-65G and other missiles, the plane can conduct air-to-air and air-to-ground operations.

Things just went from bad to worse for television personality Robert Holley:

Police said Wednesday they began investigating naturalized television personality Robert Holley last year after an alleged drug user claimed he was Holley’s gay lover and the two had used methamphetamine together.

After being placed under immediate arrest on Monday at a parking lot in western Seoul for illegally purchasing methamphetamine online and using it, Holley – also known by his Korean name Ha Il – attended a warrant hearing for his arrest in Suwon, Gyeonggi, on Wednesday.

“To my family, friends and the public who have protected me for all this time, I want to say I apologize,” Holley told reporters as he entered the courthouse.

The court rejected the detention warrant Wednesday evening, setting Holley free. It said it was hard to believe Holley would destroy evidece.

According to the Anyang Dongan Police Precinct, which investigated Holley’s case, this was the third time the law enforcement authorities have probed him for drug use, after inconclusive attempts in July 2017 and March 2018.

In last year’s attempt, according to Anyang police, a 34 year-old man arrested for drug use, identified only by his surname Cho, claimed he was Holley’s gay lover and that they had taken meth together before engaging in sexual intercourse. Police said they confirmed that Cho had visited Holley’s home multiple times through CCTV footage, and had other evidence for Cho’s claims.

Korean Constitutional Court Rules that Abortion Ban is Unconstitutional

There has been talk for years about revising the abortion laws in South Korea and this court ruling gives the politicians the cover they need to do so now:

The Constitutional Court ruled Thursday that the country’s strict abortion ban is unconstitutional, a landmark decision that signals major change in various aspects of society.
The nine-justice panel made the ruling in a 7-2 vote, in response to a 2017 complaint filed by an obstetrician standing trial for performing multiple abortions. A vote of two-thirds is required to reverse a ruling.
The court found that an outright ban on abortion under the criminal law is against the Constitution and ordered allowing termination in the early stages of pregnancy.
Thursday’s ruling requires the parliament to revise the related laws by the end of next year.

Secretary of State Pompeo Says that Kim Jong-un is a Tyrant

It is pretty clear to anyone objectively viewing this that the Trump administration is playing good cop, bad cop with Kim Jong-un:

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday acknowledged that he saw North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a “tyrant,” potentially throwing cold water on dialogue with a regime that considers its supreme leader unassailable.

Speaking to the Senate Appropriation Committee, Pompeo’s comments came as an affirmative answer to a senator’s question on whether he considers Kim a “tyrant” in the likes of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

“Sure. I’m sure I’ve said that,” Pompeo replied.

The secretary’s words were in stark contrast to U.S. President Donald Trump’s own last year when he said he “fell in love” with Kim and the praise he has lavished on the North Korean leader since. Even after his second summit with Kim in Vietnam fell apart in February, the president has maintained they continue to share a “very good” relationship.

In spite of the failed summit, Pyongyang has held back from criticizing Trump directly, saying that aides like Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton persuaded Trump to walk out. The North has since expressed interest in a third summit with Trump to work things out, an idea which was reciprocated by both Pompeo and Bolton on different occasions.
