Chinese Tourist Boycott of Japan Leads to Tourism Boom in Seoul Over Lunar New Year

From everything I have been reading the Japanese are actually happy about the reduction in Chinse tourists and the Koreans seem to be happy to have them, so a win-win for everyone:

Tang and his family were among the influx of Chinese tourists who visited Korea during the holiday period, which began on Feb. 15 and ended on Monday.

Beijing and Tokyo have been embroiled in a diplomatic dispute since November, when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that Tokyo could respond militarily to a potential attack on Taiwan. In response, Beijing has advised citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.

Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism estimated that up to 190,000 Chinese tourists visited the country during the nine-day holiday period. The daily average was 44 percent higher than during last year’s holiday window, which ran from Jan. 24 to 29.

The fresh wave of Chinese tourists brought rare optimism to Korea’s retail and tourism sectors, which have been dampened by a consumption slowdown.

In the weeks leading up to the holiday, retailers and tourism operators rolled out intensive marketing campaigns tailored to Chinese tourists, including discounts and gift vouchers linked to Chinese payment platforms such as Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Chinese tourists have traditionally been big spenders, according to Korean tourism industry officials. The most recent government data shows that the average spending per Chinese visitor to Korea reached $1,622 in 2024, compared with the overall foreign visitor average of $1,372.

Even the Korean government has been pulling out all the stops to encourage more spending by Chinese group tourists. On Feb. 15, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Chae Hwi-young visited Myeong-dong, one of Seoul’s main shopping and tourism districts, to inspect facilities for foreign visitors, and called for efforts to foster a more welcoming atmosphere.

Kim Yo-jong Promoted to Cabinet Level Position Within the North Korean Government

Kim Yo-jong had previously been in a cabinet level role five years ago and now she is back in a similar position. Analysts believe this is to solidify Kim family stewardship of the government. My guess is that she may have young kids she wanted to make sure she spent time with and now 5 years later she is ready once again for a more senior position:

Kim Yo-jong, the influential younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has been promoted to department director of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, the North’s state media reported Tuesday — a move that elevates her to a ministerial rank and further consolidates her position within the inner circle of power in Pyongyang.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said the decision followed an expanded plenary meeting of the Central Committee held a day earlier. Although the report did not specify which department Kim would lead, analysts said she was likely to take charge of the influential propaganda and agitation department, which oversees messaging, ideology and the personality cult surrounding the leadership. Kim previously served as a deputy director in that office and has long been seen as a key architect of the regime’s public statements and media strategy.

The reshuffle also restores Kim as an alternate member of the Politburo, the party’s top decision-making body. She had held a seat there until 2020, and her omission from the leadership roster unveiled at a party congress in January 2021 was widely interpreted by outside observers as either a temporary demotion or a recalibration of her portfolio rather than a genuine fall from favor.

South Korean Media Misreports So Called Apology from the USFK Commander

This Yonhap article has a completely deceptive title saying “USFK Chief Expresses ‘Regret” to Seoul Defense Minister Over Air Standoff Incident with China”. When you read the article Gen. Brunson did not show regret for conducting the exercise that led to the air stand off; the regret was that he did not personally notify the Defense Minister:

The commander of the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) has expressed “regret” to the South Korean defense minister that he was not briefed on the recent U.S. Air Force drills over the Yellow Sea on time, the USFK said Tuesday.

Gen. Xavier Brunson made the remarks during a phone call with Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back last week to discuss the situation surrounding the U.S. Air Force drill staged from last Wednesday to Thursday.

In a statement to the press, the USFK said the commander had spoken directly with Ahn to reiterate that “notification had been provided to the Republic of Korea side,” and expressed regret that the defense minister and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) “were not briefed in time.”

“U.S. Forces Korea conducts regular training to maintain the highest level of readiness and ensure it can fulfill its mission,” it said in the statement, adding, “We don’t make apologies for maintaining readiness.”

You can read more at the link and The Korea Times did the same thing was a misleading headline of “USFK Commander Reportedly Apologize Over West Sea Drill. If you read the article he once again only shared his regret that the Defense Minister was not notified. He did regret or apologize for conducting the exercise. In both articles USFK says that the ROK military were notified of the exercise. It is not Brunson’s fault that the ROK military failed to inform their senior leadership.

I think Gen. Brunson has learned you do not apologize when you did nothing wrong because the news media will twist it. Instead Gen. Brunson should have asked Defense Minister Ahn if the Russians and Chinese call him to let them know when they fly right through South Korea’s ADIZ multiple times with fighters and bomber aircraft?

Xi Congratulates Kim Jong-un on ‘Reelection’

The reelection of Kim Jong-un is the type of election Xi likes, one with no opposition because anyone that thinks of opposing is killed:

Trump Issues Warning to Countries to Not Play Games Over Supreme Court Tariff Ruling

It will be interesting to see how Korea reacts to this latest tariff news:

U.S. President Donald Trump warned Monday that any country that wants to “play games” with last week’s Supreme Court ruling against his administration’s emergency tariffs, will face a “much higher” tariff.

Trump issued the warning in a social media post after the high court ruled Friday against his use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify country-specific “reciprocal” tariffs and other duties in a major setback to his trade policy.

“Any Country that wants to ‘play games’ with the ridiculous supreme court decision, especially those that have ‘Ripped Off’ the U.S.A. for years, and even decades, will be met with a much higher Tariff, and worse, than that which they just recently agreed to,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“BUYER BEWARE!!!,” he added.
