New Mail Facility in Busan Should Get USFK Servicemembers Their Mail Quicker

Good news for U.S. troops in South Korea:

A new military mail terminal opened Thursday in Busan to improve speed and reliability of mail delivery to U.S. Forces Korea, according to the U.S. Army.  The facility is expected to strengthen “resiliency and efficiency” of military mail operations in South Korea, Col. Kimberly Pringle of U.S. Army Pacific said in a speech during the opening ceremony. “This facility enhances our ability to receive, process and distribute mail with greater speed and reliability,” she said.

Until the Busan facility opened, the joint military mail terminal at Incheon International Airport was the only military mail terminal in South Korea. Busan will process 40% of the total U.S. military mail that enters the country, which is more than 12 million pounds annually, according to an April 20 news release from the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. The terminal is expected to shorten by a day the delivery period for priority mail — from the typical 10 days to nine, James Register, Army Pacific chief of postal operations, told Stars and Stripes on Thursday.

South Korea is a very comfortable place to be a tourist; but I was never stationed there. This mail center should definitely make it better for the GIs.

“This is 2026 so mail is not really a thing anymore. But maintaining traditional is an important part of good order and discipline.

It is a little known fact that most mail these days is actually generated in one of six regional printing centers by the Department of Postal Demand Stabilization with final folding, finishing, labeling, and stamping, being done by white collar prisoners and ICE detainees.

We have found an engaged and interested workforce is more productive so we have quite a large budget to send credit cards, notebook computers, and other small high-value items through the system to keep the attention of postal workers.

A tangible benefit of this new center is, despite the high initial costs and operating overhead, we expect the delivery time of cannabinoids in USFK to drop from 10 to 9 days. This potentially represents a 10% decrease in alcohol-related sèxual assaults.

Probably our biggest achievement isn’t bringing whatever silliness into Korea, but our ability to move high volumes of graymarket sports clothing out of Korea and into urban centers where they offer an affordable alternative while supporting minority-owned small business.

We expect this temporary postal center to serve our needs while our postal mega center is being completed.”
