Lee Administration Considering Having Researchers Exempted from Mandatory Military Service

It looks like South Korea will soon have a lot of people signing up to become “researchers” in order to get out of their mandatory military service. This sounds more like a way for the rich and privileged to avoid serving in the military:

President Lee Jae Myung held a meeting with young researchers and science students Thursday and discussed ways to expand alternative military service options as part of a broader reform to the military system.

During the meeting held at Cheong Wa Dae, Lee said his administration was reviewing an overhaul of the military, including measures to substitute mandatory military service for other forms of service.

“As young men are obliged to serve in the military, they unavoidably face career breaks for a considerable period, which can become a source of conflict and lead to a sense of frustration,” he said.

Responding to a student’s suggestion that young men should be given more research opportunities during their service, Lee said the administration was reviewing such measures.

“On top of that, I plan to carry out major changes in the military,” Lee added, stressing he will seek to provide opportunities for young men to acquire expertise in cutting-edge technology and weapons systems during their service rather than wasting it away.

You are correct. This program already exists but it is exceedingly focused on real emerging STEM students so Lee is not solving any problems but widening the door for non STEM and non extra-exceptional students. Existing programs put post graduate students with government and industry for their required service period. One lesser tier puts the students into the military but into units and sectors they.can help. I met 2 SGTs in Taejon assigned to ROK Army Simulations and Modeling. Both were students from MIT studying mathematical simulations. They were way ahead of their directors but grateful to not take a complete break from their studies for 2 years

“As young men are obliged to serve in the military, they unavoidably face career breaks for a considerable period, which can become a source of conflict and lead to a sense of frustration,” he said.

If all young [South Korean] men have the same break, there can be no conflict.

Special people require special treatment.

If somebody has demonstrated special ability, it is better for them, and better for society, if their special abilities are encouraged and utilized instead of repressed and squandered.

Everybody should have equal opportunity. But equal outcome should have no guarantee.

Working in a lab is the outcome for those who studied.

Lugging kit up a mountain is the outcome for those who always played sportsball.

Difficulty Level: The ideoligical left has a bad habit of wanting equal outcomes which results in everybody being “special” when roughly 2/5 of the population need to be put down.

I highly doubt the Slav Drago’s been to Korea.

I also highly doubt he met the ROKA soldiers he claimed to have met.

Why do these Setnaffarians claim to have visited and/or experienced Korea when it is obvious from their descriptions that what they are saying is far from the truth?

“I highly doubt the Slav Drago’s been to Korea.”

I highly doubt Korea Thing has testicles.

Both of our doubts are built on the same foundation of evidence.

Actually, that’s not true.

My evidence is a bit stronger because your published opinions are in line with very low testosterone men and thick lesbians.

Is that the best you can do?

“Is that the best you can do?”

I certainly don’t waste my best material on the segment of the population that needs to be put down.
