People Power Party lawmaker Rep. Bae Hyun-jin sustained a head injury after being attacked by an unidentified assailant Thursday but remains in stable condition, her office said.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. in the southern Seoul district of Gangnam. According to Bae’s aide, a male pedestrian walked up to Bae and asked, “Are you the lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin?” and struck her in the back of the head with a rock the size of an adult man’s fist.

Bae was transported to Soonchunhyang University Hospital with her head bleeding. Bae remained conscious and her injury is not believed to be life threatening.

The suspect was momentarily arrested by police in Gangnam, and claimed to officers that he is 15 years old.

Bae, 40, is a former television news anchor who was elected to her first term in the National Assembly in 2020. She briefly served as a spokesperson for then President-elect Yoon Suk Yeol in 2022.

CCTV footage provided by Bae’s office showed that the suspect struck the lawmaker fifteen times with the rock within a span of some 10 seconds until nearby witnesses physically engaged the suspect.

Footage showed that the suspect, who wore a mask and a beanie while dressed in a hoodie, remained at the scene observing the lawmaker until Bae’s aides apprehended him. He was later handed over to police.

You can read more at the link, but the doctors believe she will be okay after stitching her head closed. They are going to continue to monitor her for a concussion and microbleeding in her cranium. It will be interesting to see what the motivation was for the attacker to commit this crime or if he has a history of mental illness or not.

“and struck her in the back of the head with a rock the size of an adult man’s fist.”

That unit of measurement threw me for a moment. I never saw it applied to rock diameter.

Normally, it is just a gay community measurement for anús width.

What did I just watch, the attacker was a 98lbs weakling, the guy who came out from the door was terrified and didn’t know what to do….WTF?!?! I guess 18 months in the ROK army teaches the opposite of self defense skills.

That hurt to watch.

I’m with FLYINGSWORD on this…

…except.

In Korea, there is no penalty for watching a woman get her head beat apart by a crazy with a rock.

On the other hand, if you were to get involved and the dangerous nutjob in the middle of comitting a deadly felony got a single scratch, YOU would be a criminal.

I know this because:

– A drunk woman tried to grab my phone and when I twisted away, she got a… single scratch. As we waited for the ambulence and police to arrive due to my horrible assault, she squeezed at it trying to draw blood, but with no luck. I immediately made a video, which didn’t please the cops, but they were on their best behavior because of it. It was 100% clear she was a drunk nutjob and there was no assault, but they still gave her the option to press charges. Why did I take the video? Because…

– Some months before, I was attacked on the street by a guy who had been arrested the night before for attacking strangers on the street. I did nothing but block his hits and walk backwards until the cops arrived (they arrived within a minute, evaluated the situation as they ran toward it, and tackled him… though they knew who he was). All good, right? Noooo. He claimed I hit him back at one point. Suddenly the pigs took a great interest in me despite no evidence and decided I might have committed a “serious crime”. By luck, someone recorded a video and gave it to me a few days later. I showed the police. Case closed. But I didn’t forget. And I didn’t forgive.

So, evaluating the situation based on experience, I might yell “stop” a few times in my least sissy voice, but it is better to watch the blood flow and the skull crack than get involved. It’s probably even better to lock the door from the inside and run away in case he comes after you and his palm gets scratched on a sharp spot on the rock as he beats dents into your face.

Korea needs to smarten up on self defense and traffic laws. There are cameras everywhere so it is increasingly easy to evaluate right and wrong.

Bonus Story: A girl threw herself on a friend’s hood and said he hit her in the crosswalk. She went to the hospital with “serious injuries”. My friend was interrogated by the police, said it was her word against his, she was injured, big civil and criminal trouble. After getting everyone out on a limb, he showed the black box video of her clearly jumping on his hood from the crosswalk after he stopped behind the line. Turns out, the pigs knew her and knew she had done this before. The whole system was unhelpful when he wanted civil and criminal penalties against her.

So, better not to get involved when no good deed will go unpunished by a not-fully-developed legal system.

CH, those Steve Inman videos of crooks in Brazil doing the FAFO shuffle that ends with a wireless hole punch or Edison medicine being applied seem appropriate.

Ridding Korea of those parasites ought to be rewarded, not punished.
