Tests Show No Radioactive Contamination of Waters Off of South Korea’s Coast

The protesters don’t care about facts like this, they only care about push anti-Japanese narratives and bashing the Yoon administration:

The radiation levels in the waters near South Korea remain well below the standards for drinkable water defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), Seoul’s oceans ministry said Sunday.

It was the first such test conducted on 15 locations in three areas of South Korea’s territorial waters after Japan began to release radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean last Thursday.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said it released the results of the radiation tests, carried out Friday, on five locations in the southeastern waters, and plans to disclose the rest of the test results on 10 other locations as soon as they are available.

In the latest result, the concentration levels of cesium-135 and cesium-137 stood at 0.067-0.094 and 0.077-0.098 becquerel per liter, respectively, compared with the WHO’s 10 becquerel per liter for drinking water.

Still makes me wonder why the Japanese didn’t just put their irradiated water back in their own water supply. Is the point that the original contaminated water needed dispersal to neutralize the radioactivity? Maybe I’m misremembering, and please correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Japanese authorities had said the water, even before dispersal, was at safe levels of radioactivity. Which leads me back to my original question. Granted, all water everywhere on the planet is connected, so everyone eventually ends up drinking everyone else’s water. That said, why the rush to share?

Worth noting Chinese nuk plants release 100x that much every year with no complaints. South Korea’s Kiro plant releases nearly 2.5x as this Japanese release all by itself.

Plenty of real issues to worry about, like finding jobs for college graduates in Korea so they aren’t tempted to USA or Europe

The water was released only three days ago. Do you truly think that the effect will be seen in such a short time? Computer simulations show that Korea will not see the effects until at least a year away when the water goes around the globe to reach Korean shores. The effects of radiation will not be seen at least decades later, with pollution from Fukushima waters being dumped daily for 30 to 50 years. Any cancers seen in people won’t be readily evident, until well into the future. This is why they have no fear of the consequences – because they know they can just push the criticisms down the line into the future generation when these old politicians are all dead anyway.

Korean Homme,

Dillution is the solution to pollution.

With a calculator, you can calculate the danger of the released water and the danger of the released water mixed with all the other water.

You can also calculate the natural radiation in seawater and see at what level of dillution the released water matches it.

If you are unwilling to do this, you are not a serious person arguing facts. You are just another tool yelling at the sky over the latest Thing you have been told to yell at the sky about.

Factoid:

By law, all alcohol sold for consumption in America has to be radioactive.

That is a true story.

But like many things, when you know the full story, the irrational becomes rational.

The reason is fermented/distilled ethyl alcohol contains radioactive carbon-14.

Alcohol made from petroleum has lost its radioactivity. However, since the distillation process is not absolute, alcohol made from petroleum can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals.

Hence radioactivity is the way to detetmine if alcohol is safe for human consumption.

Fermented alcohol also contains trace amounts of toxic chemicals but, after a lot of evolution (or God’s desire for us to party), we can manage this.

So yes, soju has formaldehyde. But you really have to go looking for it.

When you ferment, you have lots of stuff in the mix… but you will die of ethyl alcohol long before you get enough of anything else to cause a problem.

When you properly distill, the methyl alcohol comes off first. In this pure form, it will hurt you. It is best to throw this away (or take it downtown and solve the homeless problem).

Then the sweet, sweet ethyl alcohol comes off. Trace amounts of heavier alcohols and other chemicals also come off, but not enough to notice. Even if concentrated, there isn’t much compared to the volume of ethyl alvohol.

Hopefully, this gives some insight into how toxic things become functionally non-toxic through dilution.

A couple thousand years ago, someone observed the difference between medicine and poison was in the dose.

Now, if you seriously still want to complain about the Japanese radioactive water release, show us how radioactive it is, show us background radioactivity, and show us how many times it has to be dilluted to reach this level. If your numbers are cause for alarm, I will support you. If your numbers are no cause for alarm, let it go.
