U.S. to Increase South Korea’s Role in the Deployment of Nuclear Weapons

This news is likely an effort to appease the majority of South Korea’s population that now supports the ROK developing their own nuclear weapons deterrent:

Seoul and Washington are likely to agree on carrying out joint planning and joint execution of U.S. nuclear assets, according to defense analysts, Tuesday, which would mark a major upgrade of the U.S. extended deterrence provided to its ally.

According to both governments, President Yoon Suk Yeol and U.S. President Joe Biden will release an additional joint statement on strengthened extended deterrence after their summit at the White House on Wednesday (local time).

We will have to see the official announcement, but it seems the US will offer the ROK, everything short of having US nuclear weapons on the peninsula and ROK assets carrying US nuclear weapons.

Wonder how that’ll work out?

ROK assets carrying US nuclear weapons.

I have zero hope of Yoon’s ability to make any significant positive deal for Korea, but let’s wait and see. However, if your comment comes true, ROK will need to buy more expensive US nuclear weapons to mount on Korean assets with more outrageous terms and conditions, when ROK can easily develop its own weapons systems for a quarter of the price the US will be offering. I wouldn’t hold my breath for a good deal for Korea.

Actually, KM, I was referring to the arrangement the US has with NATO where US has control and ownership of the nukes but the nukes are carried and dropped by European aircraft.

In the case of Korea, I don’t think the US will offer Korea the same arrangement it has with NATO.

TOK, serious question:

If Korea can’t have American nukes, can’t use American nukes, and can’t control American nukes, what exactly will they get that they dont have now?

Nuclear weapons are great for killing cities and spreading radiation.

Are the proponents of South Korea getting nukes wanting to kill millions of fellow Asians?

Because existing weapons are better at clearing ground you want your military and civilians to occupy.

Because they sound pretty damned bloodthirsty to me.

Then again, I served on B-52s when we sat on alert with a bomb bay full of presents for the USSR. What would I know?

setnaffa, then why doesn’t the US get rid of its own nuclear weapons, if you’re so concerned?

Yes setnaffa why doesn’t the US get rid of its nukes?

And for someone who reminds us everyday that he hates China, I’m surprised that he is opposing the very thing that will enable Korea to keep China at bay.
