South Korea COVID Daily and Critical Cases Surge to Record Highs
South Korea’s surge in COVID cases just continues to get worse:
South Korea’s new coronavirus cases hit an all-time high on Wednesday as infections continued to surge around the country amid waning immunity and colder weather.
The country confirmed 7,175 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total caseload to 489,484, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
The daily tally was up by 2,221 from a day earlier, the biggest daily jump since the pandemic began early last year. The previous record of 5,352 was set on Saturday. The average daily infection cases were 5,012 for the seven days ending Tuesday.
Infections were rising especially among older adults who suffer a drop in vaccine efficacy and children who have yet to receive their first shots, according to the KDCA.
The number of critically ill COVID-19 patients also jumped to a record high of 840, up 66 from a day ago, putting further strain on the country’s already overwhelmed health care system. More than 83 percent of them were aged over 60.

By the way something that continues to be very unusual is how in Japan, just a short distance away the seven day daily COVID case average is 107 in a country with well over double to population of the ROK.

And all this happened within one month of the end of the Olympics when over 20,000 cases were reported in Japan. Then as soon as the new Japanese PM is elected, the caseload is 107 with no COVID deaths – all this in a matter of a month – what a miracle of miracles where Japan along with China and North Korea, is supposedly COVID-free! LOL. So what pill did you swallow ROK Drop? I didn’t see any praising of the Moon administration, from you regarding South Korea’s COVID deaths for the last two years is 4000, versus 1,000,000 in United States, and 19,000 “admitted” COVID deaths in Japan.

I’m not surprised at the ignorance of right-wing idiots whether they be from America or Japan.
There is a lot of talk about cases, not often differentiating between asymptomatic, symptomatic, hospitalizations, and deaths. And almost never detailing any relevant comorbidities involved. I think that’s part of why many people think it’s a scam, aside from Saint Smirky McTrollface lying and not following his own directives.
But The Economist is a valid source of medical science? That must be a new feature. Is it peer-reviewed by actual licensed medical doctors with current clinical experience in the US?
OTOH, I fully agree with the concept. Those who love the vaccine should get ready for a 3-month subscription and avoid any other medicines.
