There are no communist heroes. They fought to enable the murder of over 100M in the 20th Century alone. Some sources indicate possibly double that number, as contemporary Chinese and Soviet records are difficult to find and of questionable accuracy concerning so-called “Enemies of the State.” They also often leave out those who died of starvation and disease as a result of the failures of central planning.

Interestingly, Pres Park Chung-hee first awarded Hong Bum-do the Republic of Korea Medal of Merit for National Foundation at 1963. The medal awarded to him by Pres. Moon is his second medal.
Now we all know how Pres. Park felt about communists, so I’m curious as to whether the original Korean Twitter post above is a blind attack on Pres. Moon without any background research.
Now there’s nothing wrong with criticizing the current president, considering that his actions and inaction has left him wide open to criticisms, and may be endangering his party’s chances of winning the next elections.
However, if we are criticize him, better do it in a way that makes sense.

Well, I may be a bit black and white about the Soviets; but ’63 was when Park was consolidating his power. He may also have been claiming Korean Independence Army glory on himsrlf, to cover up his services for the Chrysanthemum Crowd.
Still, Hong was using the Soviets to hide from the Japanese. And Stalin was probably using him and his army to keep the Japanese at bay. However, Uncle Joe deported all Koreans in the USSR to Uzbek or Kazakh provinces, where, like rhe Kulaks sent to Siberia, they died in the tens or hundreds of thousands.
So maybe I can feel sorry for him for being sent to a not very nice place. But he ended up as a tool of the Soviets which they happened to throw away.
Maybe Koreans see it differently. Kim Il Sung claimed a similar anti-Japanese background to Hong.
Will be interesting for further study.

With the exception of the name calling and ludicrous claims, I’m afraid that I have to state that I’m almost in the same corner with KM in regards to the person who has tweeted the above Twitter post.
My observation regarding the Twitter posts is that they seem to be repackaged extreme Korean right wing Twitter posts garnished with her own spin, which are more or less guaranteed to make some people pay attention and in some cases for those who oppose the current administration bring up emotions.
Click bait, maybe, credible information, I don’t think so.
I believe GIKorea should vett her posts before posting them in his blog.

I’m referring to the Tweet alleging Hong’s involvement in a massacre. The original Korean Tweet stated that Hong was a member of the Soviet Communist Party and that Moon being a ‘commie’ is giving him a medal(his second) and a hero’s burial.
Hong, being a member of the Soviet Communist Party is no secret, since there are papers to prove it. Whether he was coerced or joined without any hesitation is up for debate.
As for Pres, Moon, I think this is one event to add to his list of achievements during his presidency and hopefully improve his ratings. He doesn’t have much in the way of achievements so bringing home a Korean Independence general after all this years has good optics.
In regards to the massacre, there is no clear evidence that Hong participated in the massacre in question, although Korean extreme right wingers have taken the opportunity of Hong’s recent repatriation to accuse him of such, which begs the question, why now after all these years?
What is troubling about the author of the Tweet above is that IMO she makes it look like that what she says are 100% true and factual, in addition to adding a bit of flavor to make it sensational.
For people outside of Korea, who do not know about and understand the current dynamics, this gives a wrong impression.
Yes, as residents of a democracy, we have the right to free speech. But IMO as responsible citizens of a democracy, we should also practice responsibility when making claims or statements, especially ones that have little or no objective proof.
But on the other hand, if one is into social media and has a thirst for attention and clicks, that responsibility sometimes has the tendency to go out the window……

Anyways, I do not think Pres. Moon is communist. Liberal, a bit misguided, and indecisive with a knack for making the average people of Korea angry, yes maybe but communist? No I don’t think so.
The sad thing is the guy came to power with a lot of hope, expectations, and political capital backing him up.
But instead of learning from the mistakes of his mentor, Pres. Roh Moohyun, he squandered it by repeating and in some cases magnifying the mistakes, resulting in the mess we see now and leaving him wide open for criticism from the right.
