McDonald’s Korea to Introduce Non-Plastic Packaging

For people that have done beach clean ups would know, plastic packaging is a major pollution concern in the world’s oceans. This is a small start to trying to reduce the pollution:

McDonald’s Korea has announced a new campaign aimed at contributing to the environment and community under the slogan “Small but great changes for a better community.

In light of the current COVID-19 situation, the American fast food restaurant chain presented four actions ― Our Planet, Food Quality & Sourcing, Community Connection and Jobs, Inclusion & Empowerment ― to aid local communities and protect the environment.

McDonald’s Korea said it will implement concrete plans for each to achieve sustainable growth.

Our Planet

The company plans to expand the operations of eco-friendly restaurants through reducing its use of plastics, using environmentally friendly packaging materials and replacing all of its delivery scooters with green electric vehicles.

By 2025, McDonald’s plans to transition 100 percent to recyclable, recycled, or certified packaging materials by to end plastic use, and to replace the inks used on such materials with natural ones. To this end, the company will also introduce cup lids that allow customers to enjoy their drinks without using a plastic straw.

If they really want their customers in Korea to embrace this move, they should say that plastic packaging is the real cause of mad cow disease.

After my surgeries, I have to use plastic straws to drink. Even using an adult sippy cup won’t be useful to me. And there are many actually “differently-abled” people in the same boat. Anticipating this type of flummery, I went to a restaurant supply place and bought a 10 year supply.

And the plastic waste everyone hates is — as always — 90% from China, so this is merely empty virtue-signalling. People in politics or entertainment or media are nearly all to timid to note that communists are as brutal and inhumane as they ever were. And the Chinese variety killed between 60 and 90 Million Chinese during their rise to power and consolidation of same.

Yeah, they got yer “Great Leap Forward” right there in the same work camps as the Uighurs.

BTW, McDonald’s went away from plastic to paper products and lost money–that’s why they went back to plastic. I imagine they’re planning to lose more money again… they’re big enough to handle a bit of hassle–like those salads that went over like lead balloons.

A lot of our local restaurants have switched to some kind of compressed paper take-out boxes, I think mostly because of COVID, and doing more take-out than in-house orders, and they last pretty well for several days in the fridge. Paper straws (which I remember from my youth), eh, not so good, though the compressed paper ones are better.

(I don’t have a website, so I’ve used the URL of my Flickr page.)
