USFK A-10 Accidentally Drops Projectile Over Mountains in Gangwon Province
Some enterprising hiker in the future may wander upon this prize one day:

An A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot inadvertently dropped a projectile outside a designated training area on Oct. 13, according to the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan.
The pilot from the 25th Fighter Squadron was on a routine training flight when he released the non-explosive projectile over rough, remote terrain just south of Pilsung Ragne in Gangwan Province, according to an emailed statement from wing spokesman 1st Lt. Daniel de La Fe.
The South Korean Ministry of Defense was immediately notified and a combined search and recovery team from the wing and South Korea swept the area from the air and ground, according to the statement.
“During the sweep, leadership from both the U.S. and [South Korean] sides determined that based on the terrain at the projected location of impact, there was not a significant threat to anyone and called the search off on Oct. 16,” de La Fe wrote.

“non-explosive projectile”… That may not be something anyone WANTS to find…
It happens. Twice when we were in the ROK (other times elsewhere).
Once the base safety people were able to remove the practice (non-explosive) bomb before the locals knew about it (think it landed on a kia plant property or some such).
Typically if a pilot gets a callsign like “hit man”, “slew” or “shooter” it’s not because of something cool they did in combat
LOL. We had a few choice nicknames for “gifted” officers. We didn’t use callsigns, in the bomb squadron back in the day. We didn’t have a “conventional” missiom and SAC, by design, had zero sense of humor. But it was memorialized in verse. And a recently-translated version is copied below (with apologies to anyone who is offended):
LOL That was great, Setnaffa!
Thanks for sharing that. 😆
Common enough. Below link is another instance of basically the same thing.
Most likely a BDU-33 which is a small blue 25 lbs non-explosive training bomb. They can be armed with a shotgun shell sized pyrotechnic that shoots smoke on impact so the pilot can see where it hit. Inert if no shotgun shell.
Then there’s this:
There I was — 1982, my dorm at Kunsan was evacuated over a bomb threat because one guy decided to bring one of these things back to the dorm as a souvenir. Jokes on him; next day comes an unannounced health & welfare inspection, 0600, everyone out, stand at parade rest outside your door. First sergeant finds this “bomb” and immediately evacuates the dorm. First Sgt’s a career cop; he doesn’t know what it is. Needlesstosay loser-boy was summarily discharged — he was already on a UIF so this incident was just icing on the BCD cake.
