Over 800 People Infected with Coronavirus with 8 Deaths Reported in South Korea
The coronavirus spread continues to get worse, particularly in Daegu:

South Korea reported another record daily spike in the number of new coronavirus cases on Monday, and two more deaths from COVID-19, with most new cases centered in the southeastern city of Daegu, where health authorities are shifting the focus of the anti-virus fight to containing its spread.
The 231 additional cases of the new coronavirus brought the total number of infections in South Korea to 833.
The two latest victims of the potentially fatal illness are tied to Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo, near Daegu. Six out of the eight deaths here are linked to the hospital where over 110 people were confirmed to have been infected.
Daegu, where 2.5 million people have been asked to stay indoors, saw its confirmed cases jump by 196 to 483 on Monday, despite efforts to stem the spread of the virus, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said in a statement.

You can read more at the link, but the number of infected and the 8 deaths show just under a 1% fatality rate with this virus so far.

Under 1% fatality rate, not 10%.
Wonder if the strain of COVID released in Daegue was stronger than most. Singapore has had high number recover, be interested to know the recovered number in Korea as well.
Chris B…
Deaths lag infections.
The true measure is to see how many people were infected when the 8 people who died were infected. It was closer to 80.
Now 800 people are infected… and out of that 800, the number of deaths will be 80ish.
Flying… as of now:
843 infected
22 recovered
8 died
@Chris B, thanks I fixed it. 🙁 I was typing too fast posting this. Overall though this is showing that the virus may be contagious but not super deadly. However, if this thing continues to spread a less than 1% death rate does add up after a while.
You guys aren’t listening.
You don’t calculate the percentage of deaths from the people who just got sick and haven’t died yet.
You calculate the percentage of deaths from how many people were sick when the dead started showing symptoms.
There is an almost conspiratorial effort to hide the true fatality rate by calculating it incorrectly.
If you want to use valid-sounding statistics, try simply calculating by resolved cases… where patients have recovered or died.
In Korea, there are currently 22 recovered and 8 dead. That’s a 33% fatality rate!
This is great news! We can evoke complacency or fear with any perfectly valid statistics we dream up!
Data from the computers at the Shincheonji Church has been seized in an attempt to quarantine and prevent further spread:

Gyeonggi Provincial authorities on Tuesday seized computers from an annex building of the Christian sect confirmed as a transmission cluster for a novel coronavirus, as part of efforts to track the potential spread of the disease and contain it.
A list of 42,000 followers of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus was secured during a digital forensics investigation, according to the provincial government.
More at the link, of course.
And now 11 ROKA troops are confirmed with having COVID-19:

(Yonhap)
Eleven service members have been confirmed to have the new coronavirus as of early Monday, and around 7,700 others are quarantined as part of efforts to stop the virus from spreading further into barracks, the defense ministry said.
Eight COVID-19 cases in the Army and one each in the Navy, the Air Force and the Marine Corps were confirmed as of 8 a.m. Monday, up from a total of seven cases the previous day, according to the ministry.
Still seems to be mostly in and around Daegu, but that won’t last much longer.
Wash you hands, use sanitizer.
“And now 11 ROKA troops are confirmed with having COVID-19
That sucks. 🙁
Per death rates….the Wu flu map seems to consistently show around a ten percent death rate per number of recovered. In Iran the number looks far higher.
I really have to wonder what is happening with those Uighurs in camps now.
Anecdotes from the agricultural areas indicate the “smell of death” from animals that lack care due to the vast quarantine.

From the physician’s letter:
Also, we learned that like other coronaviruses, this one engenders limited immunity in the host. A few days to a few weeks later, the host’s immune system has completely forgotten how to fight it. And it seems that the second time the host gets infected is much worse than the first time. And an interesting fact about this virus is the second infection will in some patients profoundly damage the interior of the arteries, and cause acute heart attacks and sudden cardiac death. Thus, all the videos of people dropping over dead. To my medical knowledge, this intimal arterial damage is unique in the viral world.
If this is true, I have little doubt this organism was produced in a biowarfare lab. Nut we all knew this couldn’t be “less lethal than the flu”. The Chinese get the flu every year, and they don’t respond like this. Watch what they do, not what they say. They know.
Just to highlight this bit:
Also, we learned that like other coronaviruses, this one engenders limited immunity in the host. A few days to a few weeks later, the host’s immune system has completely forgotten how to fight it.
I don’t know a whole lot about virology, but it seems to me this doesn’t bode well for a vaccine.
I know someone who has self-quarantined as he was exposed to someone who was exposed. That guy will get his test results back today so the guy I know can relax or get tested.
I don’t want him to catch it… but… a few weeks ago when I was talking about new paradigms like no handshakes and don’t touch my shìt, he smart-àssidly whipped out the old Wolfram Mathematica and preceded to make beautiful graphs of the world population and my chance to catch the WuFlu.
Put that way, it seemed so distant.
If he does catch it, I’m going to put an arrow on the trivial-but-nonzero end of the graph and say, “You are here.”
Did he get his results, CH?
Yes.
The guy who was exposed came back negative today so my friend will not be tested (nor will any of the others who came into contact with him).
However, despite the negative result, he is home quarantined for 2 weeks as per the Man.
Actually everyone is nervous as we have movement between places like China and Iran and lots of other international flights… which I christened Flying Plague Tubes… so everyone is playing hard to get right now.
I mostly work from home anyway… but when I absolutely positively have to meet anyone, I wear a military gas mask with an adapter 3D printed to use cheap 3M P100 filters (I don’t have chemical or petroleum considerations)… and these filters are easily available in Korea as everyone fights over KN95 masks (for which they have no idea how to use correctly).
When I greet people, I always say, “Come to the dark side, young skywalker.”
Some get it. Some don’t.
Anyhoo… this will get worse before it gets better.
I have 6 months worth of MREs and other luxury food, 1200 liters of water, and access to weapons… so who cares.
Stay safe, CH. (and everyone else here)
Sounds like you’re in good shape!
We live on a mountain in a pretty secluded area, but my spouse flies for SWA. Which doesn’t have international flights, but he might as well with the airports.
We’re getting a generator this week, hopefully (we have a well).
Have two crates of MREs but the boys could eat that in a couple of days. Time to stock up.
Liz, I am on my game.
Make sure the hubby looks at the intertubes and researches basic anti-viral safety.
Anyway…
This is well worth reading.

CH, great science fiction. Why do I say that? I’m 60+, living paycheck to paycheck due to the cancer treatment costs and extended time between jobs, live in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, my wife is from Seoul, and “living” in my lexicon does not include depending on diet including the “4 Fingers of Death”…
I also doubt I could shoot anyone. Even a BernieBro.
So, I’ll likely be one of the first zombie victims. Hopefully, I won’t start voting Democrat…
BTW, that doesn’t mean I’m starving. It just means my retirement has been postponed until maybe 2060…
