Thr saddest day in Commie Moon’s life.
I was aboard the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) when Fatty the First kicked over. We were on our way back to home port and did that throw the schedule off! We ended up rushing back, the air wing personnel grabbed their gear, and then back to sea “to be ready for whatever happened” in the wake of that bastard’s death.
@johnhenry – I was onboard Indy just before that happened in April 1994 when we all went into the Yellow Sea, launched aircraft and chased a little hole in the clouds trying to get those guys back on board. Unfortunately for the flyboys, the weather got worse and they had to rough it at Kunsan Airbase in South Korea for the night. I was part of the TAD team from Hawaii working in the Radio spaces. Spooks, as you all affectionately called us.
I remember 8 July 1994 like it was yesterday, there I was, no sh*t, knee deep in expended LAW tubes and hand grenade pins….on leave in Cincinnati, OH on my way to Artillery Officer Advance Course…. 😛
I remember hearing through the propaganda speakers that the North was going to bury I’ll Sung in Seoul 3 days after his death when I patrolled the DMZ in 1989. I was in the Guard when he kicked off and wondered if we were going to war and if I should consider requesting transfer back to Active Duty.
Yeah, the summer of ’94. There I was. I got sent TDY to England. Supposed to be put up at a “Bed and Breakfast” in Windsor; but they stuck us instead at a 4th floor (no elevator, mind) Council Flat along Fulham High Street.
The PC I was promised was never ordered because the local executive’s secretary was po’d over losing her Mac. I had to share a single desk and PC with 4 other guys who were actual denizens of the Stockley Park Data Center while I was allegedly helping design new LAN servers for them. In fact, all I ended up doing was helping them remove a Word Macro Virus they had unwittingly installed on customer PCs.
English “cuisine” is beyond polite words. And they eat with their forks upside down.
It was scary, I tell you! They also refused to give me a driver and I had to learn to drive on the wrong side of the road. Some of those poor benighted sots probably lost a few years off their lives seeing me hurtling past then until I “got my sea-legs”…
Oh, wait, you were referring to military scary stuff.
Sorry. I sat nuclear alerts in ’79 and ’80 when Carter was busy pretending to be tough with no conventional options. That surely can’t compare.
