South Korea Plans to Send A Spacecraft to the Moon by 2030

I wonder if the ROK government will replace South Korean astronauts with undeserving North Korean astronauts if the Kim regime demands it like they did for the Winter Olympics?:

South Korea unveiled a long-term plan Monday to secure indigenous space technology with the aim of successfully landing a spaceship on the moon by 2030, the science ministry said.

Under the roadmap crafted and finalized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the government will secure the necessary basic technology to send a spacecraft into lunar orbit by 2020 and to land it on the surface of Earth’s satellite a decade later.

In order to meet the goal, the ministry will begin analyzing critical related technology starting in 2019, officials said.

It marks the first time that the Moon Jae-in administration, which took office in May 2017, has mapped out a long-term strategy for space exploration. In the past, the country has mostly been busy with narrowing a technology gap with powerhouses such as the United States and Russia, the ministry said.

Under the latest plan, South Korea will also begin an era of private companies launching orbital space programs in 2026.  [Yonhap]

I guess we got the Pyeongyang moon landing to look forward to.

They said landing a spacecraft. Nothing about landing with astronauts, which is a much more difficult feat.

Before the ROK government buys moon rockets, it needs to buy enough rocket artillery to replace the capability of the 2ID’s 210th FA Brigade so USFK can close Camp Casey and get all its forces south of Seoul, out of range of the enemy’s tube artillery.

Rockmarne, doesn’t matter. nK 300MRL can reach out and touch the Hump.
Very long range, probably GPS guided, low CEP.

Camp Carroll is also south of Seoul as are Camps Henry, George, and Walker. All are many miles south of the Hump..

Yeah, but that is not where the combat power is. Everything in Daegu is log ops, to include carroll is logistic ops. 2ID HQ and units at humphreys & 8th Army at humphreys

The armored brigade combat team, with its DS FA Bn, is at the Hump. The long range FA can be further to the rear. Basic tactics.

Yeah. Basic tactics. Too bad none of the generals are as up on tactics as you…

Too bad it has taken so long to execute this move. The DPRK has had time to develop longer range weapons. So hopefully the generals will adapt their planning to the new reality. I think they will.

ROK Marne, basing really has no basis from the tactical situation. Came down to funding….

No, former SECDEF Rumsfeld was disatisfied with the way the forces were based and he wanted them repositioned to provide more flexibility. His feeling was that the US forces in Korea had been been more or less frozen in place where they were when the Armisitice had been signed. Rumsfeld an analysis done which concluded that restationing them outside of the enemy’s tube artillery range would give commanders more options.

More flexibility to be concentrated in one place, next to the West Sea? sheer genius. May have been the reason but the selection of Humphreys was out of convenience and money as base was already, just had to do some expansion. Now USFK, 8th Army, and 2ID HQ are in one target…err location.

No, Humphreys was selected for its proximity to Osan. The idea being that the 2ID would no longer be tied specifically to the Korean Peninsula. For a while, Korea based elements of 2ID participated in exercises in other countries. For example, the 2-9 Inf trained in Thailand for COBRA GOLD in 2013.
