Jenkins to Visit US
Former US Army deserter Charles Jenkins may decide to visit the US with his family to visit his 91 year old mother.
Jenkins has asked to travel to the United States to see his 91-year-old mother who lives in a nursing home in North Carolina, Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The newspaper said Jenkins would be accompanied by his family and that the trip was expected to last around a week.
The Kyodo news agency says Jenkins may head to the United States as soon as Tuesday next week.
SGT Jenkins must be crazy to visit USA especially place like in North Carolina, where Fort Bragg is located with Thousands of US Paratroopers who do not sympathized with him and his family. I think SGT Jenkins should go straight to Iraq and stayed there for a year as Active Duty SGT and come back as real Combat Vet and then he really earned his right to visit his sick mommy.
I look at it like this, I don't respect Jenkins in anyway for what he did but he turned himself over to the Army and the Army tried him and gave him his punishment. He has paid his debt to society so he should be free to visit his mother if he wants to.
I am also sure if given the choice he would rather do a year in Iraq than 40 years in North Korea. To bad he didn't realize that 40 years ago when he defected to North Korea to get out of going to Vietnam.
You are right about that. I don't think he had much choice in the matter of turning himself in to US Army authority. He will go to hell and back to get out of North Korea and to be with his family. (Come to think of it, I think he already did.) OK, he deserves to visit his mommy.
What about all those GI who died in Korean War, Vietnam War and even in Iraq who did not get to see their mommy before they died? Jenkin's US visit put slap on their face.
