10% of Koreans Married to Foreigners
According to the Chosun, 10% of Koreans are married to a foreigner.
Some 10 percent of Koreans are married to foreigners. Often they are men who marry women from developing countries.
Korean men unwilling or unable to find spouses at home are increasingly turning to life partners not only from among ethnic Koreans in China but from Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia and from Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Often there is a commercial element to these unions. Many such couples lead contented lives, but many other marriages fail due to racial discrimination and ill-treatment.This can be particularly damaging to women from Third World countries, who already find themselves socially isolated because of language and culture barriers and have nowhere to turn to if they suffer violence from husbands or other family members. Those who escape to shelters run by private charities often bear scars that will take a lifetime to heal.
I find the stat that 10% of Koreans are married to foreigners to high. I can’t say that 10% of the Korean people I know, and I know a lot of them, are married to a foreigner. Here is something else I find unbelievable:
“Overall, I think the proportion of problem families to ordinary families is 7:3. But all cross-cultural families have problems,” said Min Myung-suk of Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, who has been married to a Filipina for nine years.
It is mostly the Korean husbands who are responsible for the failure of such marriages, according to experts. “Men are responsible 90 percent of the time. They should help their foreign wives to adapt to life in Korea,” but they do not, believes lawmaker Kim Chun-jin, a member of the National Assembly’s Social Affairs and Welfare Committee.
So basically this stat is telling me that 7 out of 10 families with a foreign spouse is having problems. That is disturbingly high and with such a high number of problems it makes me wonder why Koreans want to keep importing wives. There has got to be a better way for men here to meet women to marry. Difficult problem and I am not sure what the solution is.

Do Korean men tend to be male chauvinist? Do they expect their wives to cook, clean and have kids as soon as they get married?
The men who tend to marry foreigners are usually middle aged and live in rural Korea where they do tend to have the male chauvinist tendencies. Most of these foreign women come from the Phillipines, Vietnam, and China.
“It is mostly the Korean husbands who are responsible for the failure of such marriages, according to experts.”
Considering that at least half of those marriages are fake fraudulent marriages for Korean green cards, I find that hard to believe.
Then how come the White man – Korean woman marriage failure rate is 90%? That’s an even more disturbing failure rate. Ottokke.. Ottokke…
My friend is a doctor in a large town located in the middle of a big farming area. Many of his patients are SE Asian women. Ten percent is hard to believe on a national level… but the number of brokediick old farmers with weary-looking younger wives is pretty amazing.
Many wives have it pretty bad… (relative) poverty, isolation, mental and physical abuse, control issues, large culture gap, husbands with unrealistic demands and expectations, etc.
Once the excitement of car and flatscreen ownership wears off, the level of happiness goes down. Every year or so, a group of these wives get together and vanish into urban Korean along the bamboo railroad… filled with good, bad, and desperate people.
They become barely-getting-by mistresses for near middle-age Korean salarymen. They become hope-filled girlfriends for loser forigners who can’t score a Korean girl. They become targets of predators who understand their poverty, desperation, and hopelessness… and easily take advantage of it.
Korea has done a very good job of trying to condition, educate, socialize, and integrate foreign wives into Korea in a bid to save the agricultural sector… but some turds just won’t polish too brightly.
It is still hard to know if this foreign wife policy will be an overall gain or loss for Koreain
I find the claim shaky but not the 10% figure itself, but the claim that it’s mostly Korean men marrying foreign women.
Sounds like the typical insecure spin used to hide the fact that increasingly Korean women are fed the F up with the way they’re treated not just individually in relationships and the family model but life in the Dae Han in general. In addition to marrying outside the country they’re just forgoing marriage entirely.
