Korean Shaman Convicted of Sexual Assault for Undressing Woman During Ritual

Here is a power tip to anyone using religious rituals to fight demons, make sure you get consent from the person you are holding the ritual for to take their clothes off before doing so:

A shaman has been found guilty of sexual assault for undressing a young woman in public during an invocation rite as she wielded a knife.

Busan District Court sentenced the female shaman, 53, to six months’ jail, suspended for two years, and 40 hours of sexual harassment treatment.

Although the shaman was performing a ritual, the court ruled the act was a sexual assault because it went against sexual ethics.

According to the written judgment on Sunday, a woman, aged in her 20s, and her mother went to the shaman because the daughter was feeling pain.

The shaman told the mother, “We have to remove the male spirit that is stuck on her body. The shaman told the daughter to lie down, removed the woman’s undergarments, and then wielded a large knife around her.

The ritual was performed in front of a crowd that included males, which humiliated the woman

Before the ritual, the shaman asked the woman about her sex life and did not inform her about what would happen during the ritual.  [Korea Times]

Korean Shaman Found Not Guilty of Frauding Woman of $499,000

What I learned from this article is that if you commit fraud under a religious pretext it is perfectly legal.  By the way who knew being a shaman could be so lucrative?:

A shaman who was taken to court on charges of fraud was ruled not guilty by the Seoul Southern District Court on Wednesday.

“Shamanism is, for the most part, aimed at gaining consolation and inner peace. Even if shamanistic rituals do not yield the promised outcome, it is difficult to hold the shaman accountable for the failure,” the court said.

The shaman in the case had blamed the spirits of the victim’s aborted twin babies for her husband’s flagging business and suggested the victim appease the spirit babies through special rituals.

The prosecution accused the shaman of fraud for carrying out an excessive number of rituals and charging over 560 million won ($499,000). The shaman provided 133 rituals in the period between January 2011 and December 2015. During the time, she sent mobile text messages to the alleged victim using baby talk as if she was possessed with the twins’ spirits.

The text messages read, “I know how you feel mommy. Please don’t feel sad. We love you,” “We ate loads of the meat you sent us. We love it very much.”  [Korea Herald]

Korean Mother Kills 3-Year Old Son During Shamanistic Ritual

This is just a horrible story coming out of Incheon:

A single mother’s twisted love has led to the tragic death of her three-year-old baby who was brutally beaten with a peach tree stick used by shamans for exorcism.

The 26-year-old mother identified by her surname Choi and her mother Shin, 50, have been arrested on charges of child abuse and manslaughter at their home in Incheon, south of Seoul, police said.

Choi and Shin were accused of whipping the whole body of their child with a peach tree stick and a hula-hoop for two days from February 18. After their shamanistic ritual, the baby was left abandoned to starve for three days.

It all started when Choi, who was suffering from depression, was captured by an illusion that her baby was possessed with an evil spirit. On recommendations from a shaman, she performed her own exorcism with a bible and a peach tree stick.  [Aju Daily]
