USFK NCO Caught Up in Bizarre Child Custody Dispute

Here is a really messed up story involving a USFK soldier who had his wife cheat on him, get pregnant, then falsely claim the child was his, and then falsely claim the baby died at child birth:

Sgt. Steven Garcia holds the baby, who is at the center of an unusual custody battle.

A South Korea-based soldier has been entangled in a monthslong drama complete with a cheating spouse, long-distance lies and kidnapping charges.

Sgt. Steven Garcia, 24, is a patrol supervisor with the 142nd Military Police Company at Yongsan Garrison in Seoul. In January, he was told that his wife, Marina Garcia, had given birth to a daughter back home in Arizona who died during childbirth.

“When my sister called me about that, it was pretty emotional,” Garcia told KVOA News in Tucson. “We cried quite a bit together over the phone. It was devastating.”

But he soon learned it wasn’t true.

On Feb. 5, an Arizona highway patrolman pulled over an out-of-state vehicle for speeding north of Willcox, Ariz., according to court documents. Inside was a Texas couple and a newborn.

Upon questioning the couple – Alex Hernandez, 33, and his wife, Leslie Morin Hernandez, 41 – the trooper learned that neither was a biological parent of the 3-day-old infant, the documents said.

Further questioning at the police station revealed that Alex Hernandez had fraudulently signed the birth certificate as the father after Marina Garcia arranged to give the child to them.

The Hernandezes were taken into custody, and the baby, who relatives said is named Leo, was handed over to Arizona’s Department of Child Safety.

Later that day, detectives questioned Marina Garcia, who was living in Sierra Vista with her boyfriend, an Army specialist. She admitted to conspiring with the Hernandezes and planned to travel to Texas to sign away her parental rights after recovering from delivery, according to court documents obtained by Stars and Stripes.  [Stars & Stripes]

You can read more at the link, but Sergeant Garcia unsurprisingly wants a divorce.  He also wants custody of the baby even though it is not his because he was a child that was adopted.

As unfortunate as this story is, I could not help, but think about this article after reading it.

Kim Yo-jong Reportedly Gives Birth to Second Child

Kim Yo-jong sure did a good job not showing she was eight months pregnant during her visit to South Korea:

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s younger sister gave birth to a baby not long after she visited South Korea in February to attend the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Kim Yo-jong was already about eight months pregnant when she came to Seoul on Feb. 9. She is believed to have given birth before the inter-Korean summit on April 27, intelligence authorities here said.

During the summit the signs of her pregnancy were already gone and she wore tight-fitting clothes.

She also accompanied her brother to a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Dalian on May 8-9.

Intelligence authorities believe she had her first child in 2015. Her husband is thought to be the son of a low-ranking Workers Party official and a classmate of hers at Kim Il-sung University.

The North Korea Strategic Information Service Center, a defector group, has identified him as U In-hak.

Kim Yo-jong is increasingly playing the role of her brother’s chief secretary, but it remains to be seen whether she will be by his side at the North Korea-U.S. summit in Singapore next month.  [Chosun Ilbo]

Japanese Woman Reprimanded By Employer for Getting Pregnant When It Wasn’t Her Turn

Does anyone know if this is something that Korean employers try to implement as well?:

Timing of one unidentified woman reportedly clashed with pregnancy “shifts” drawn by the childcare centre director

Japanese worker has been reprimanded by her boss for “selfishly breaking the rules” after she became pregnant before it was her “turn”, according to media reports.

The woman was working at a private childcare centre in Aichi prefecture, north Japan, when she found out she was pregnant.

However, the timing reportedly clashed with “shifts” drawn by the childcare centre director, which listed when female staff were allowed to marry and have children.

The plight of the woman, who has not been identified, highlights the unsettling practice of some Japanese companies dictating when female staff are allowed to marry and have children, depending on their level of seniority.  [The Telegraph]

Korean-American Woman Sues Ex-Boyfriend for Secretly Giving Her Birth Control Pills

Just in case anyone has any ideas about trying something like this you may want to read below because you can be held legally accountable:

A Korean-American woman is suing her ex-boyfriend for secretly dosing her with birth control pills.

The woman, 36, surnamed Hyo, filed a compensation suit for $5 million to her American ex-boyfriend, a neuroradiology doctor, for allegedly feeding her “Plan B One-Step” without her knowledge, according to The New York Post.

Hyo confronted her ex-boyfriend last May when she found an empty birth control pill box inside a trash bin.

“I knew you would not consent to taking birth control pills voluntarily, so I resorted to using this method,” the man allegedly confessed after admitting that he had been dissolving the pills in her juice.

The two broke up after the incident.
