Someone mark this date. This way when he or a future leader of the Philippines again is quoted saying “I want them out.” but is referring to the Chinese who had overwhelmed them because they told everyone who had helped them in the past to take a hike we can all point back to this day and say “Hey remember this?”

Seriously how the F did this guy get elected?

By the way anyone else find it humorous that he made this statement in Japan of all places.

@smokes – As the resident Philippines expert here, I agree with you. The old adage “cutting off your nose to spite your face” comes to mind. I am wondering when they will call the Philippines a “wayward province” like they do with Taiwan?
As to your question about how the “F” this guy got elected, that’s what happens when you have a pluralistic election system. All you need to win a Presidential election here is 1% more votes than your next nearest competitor. Duterte I believe got about 37% of the vote, the other 5 candidates split the other 43%.

Sorry, my math skills were never too good. I meant 63%.

It might make for an entertaining reality tv show or comedy, but for negotiating their nations’ foreign affairs? Not so much.

Someone please read a book on high-stakes negotiation tactics before claiming to know what guys like Duterte and Trump are actually thinking.
