Chinese Navy Conducts Military Exercise Off the Coast of Korea

After flying aircraft though the ROK ADIZ now the Chinese military is conducting naval drills off of the Korean peninsula.  I think it is pretty clear that the Chinese government is sending a message to the ROK government to continue to play nice with North Korea and don’t give into demands from the Trump administration:

China’s People’s Liberation Army naval forces have conducted two drills and plan another this week near the Korean Peninsula in a possible show of force, ahead of a planned inter-Korea summit in Pyongyang in September.

According to China’s maritime authorities on Thursday, the Chinese navy is to again conduct drills in its northeastern waters from Friday to Sept. 7, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

The plan for the military exercises comes about a week after the navy conducted an eight-day drill in the Bohai Sea from Aug. 17 to 24, and another drill took place between Aug. 18 and 22, according to the report.

All training took place in waters between the Liaodong Peninsula in Liaoning Province, and the Shandong Peninsula of Shandong Province.

The area is not far from North Korea‘s Hwanghae Provinces.

Chinese Naval Flotilla To Conduct Port Call In Hawaii

Here is another example of small, but still significant engagement with the Chinese military:

Three Chinese navy ships will stop in Hawaii on the final leg of an around-the-world deployment meant to show China’s expanding global military capability, but also highlighting ongoing relations between the United States and People’s Liberation Army despite disagreement in the South China Sea.

Chinese media reported the destroyer Jinan, frigate Yiyang and oiler Qiandaohu will stop in Acapulco, Mexico, and then Hawaii following a port call in Cuba. The flotilla also made China’s first navy visit to the East Coast earlier this month, visiting Naval Station Mayport in Florida and conducting a passing exercise with U.S. Navy ships.

The “20th Chinese naval escort task force” started the deployment Aug. 23, after completing civil ship escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coast. The ships have since visited Sudan, Egypt, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Portugal and other nations.  [Stars & Stripes]

China Leaks News of Development of 2nd Aircraft Carrier

It is ironic that China is complaining so much about a defensive weapon system such as THAAD being deployed to Korea, but yet is in the process of developing a 2nd aircraft carrier to threaten its neighbors with:

The leaks and so-called misstatements have included information that construction began in 2014 in Dalian port, where the Liaoning was refurbished. They also included information that the new ship will have a modern catapult for launching aircraft and generally will be more advanced than the Liaoning. In addition, construction is scheduled to be completed in 2020. Readers should consider all of the leaks to be calculated and deliberate.

A retired Admiral and former political commissar for the Navy; an active duty naval commissar and a Communist Party official from Liaoning Province have been prominent in the steady stream of information about the new, modern Chinese aircraft carrier. Each has contributed bits of new information about the new carrier.

The cover story of excited, but inadvertent leaks is part of a propaganda strategy that aims to keep regional neighbors informed, but not alarmed. The fact is that China can build and is building a US-style aircraft carrier and sea control ship. Some sources reported the goal is to build six,  [NightWatch]
