Gloria Steinem to Headline “Lets DMZ” Event In September in South Korea

I wonder how much Gloria Steinem is being paid to attend this event?:

World-renowned activists in the areas of peace and human rights are coming to South Korea early this autumn to call for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Scheduled attendees for the “Let’s DMZ” event taking place to commemorate the first anniversary of the September 19 Pyongyang Joint Statement between the South and North Korean leaders include Gloria Steinem, a social activist known as the “godmother of the global women’s rights movement”; Phan Thi Kim Phuc, a human rights campaigner known as the “napalm girl”; and Mikis Theodorakis, a Greek composer and democracy activist with a history of resistance fighting.

Let’s DMZ includes numerous different events taking place around the Gyeonggi Province area over the month of September with the aim of transforming the Demilitarized Zone from a symbol of division into one of peace that can be seen, heard, and experienced by everyone. Gyeonggi Vice Governor for Peace Lee Hwa-young described plans for four major events – a DMZ Forum, Live DMZ, DMZ Festa, and Art DMZ – in a Let’s DMZ briefing on Aug. 28 at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office in Suwon.

Activists Cross DMZ and Claim They are Promoting Human Rights

Just the fact that they paid money to the Kim regime to travel to North Korea shows they care little about human rights and more about promoting themselves:

A group of foreign women activists crossed the heavily fortified inter-Korean border from North Korea on Sunday, voicing hope that their move could help bring lasting peace to a divided peninsula.

About 30 female activists from around the world, including U.S. activist Gloria Steinem and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire, marched down from the North to the South across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to mark the International Women’s Day for Disarmament.

The DMZ, which bisects the Korean Peninsula, is a 259-kilometer-long and 4-kilometer-wide strip of rugged no-man’s land stretching from coast to coast, serving as a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War that ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

“We are feeling very positive (about) what we’ve accomplished … which is a trip for peace, for reconciliation and for human rights and a trip to which both governments agreed,” Steinem told a press conference in South Korea. “We were able to be citizens’ diplomats.”. [Yonhap]

You can read more at the link such as how the North Korean media reported how this group paid homage to Kim Il-sung which they deny. Their denials are irrelevant because by agreeing to travel to North Korea in the first place they made themselves willing propaganda pieces for the Kim regime.

State Department Warns Kim Regime Useful Idiots from Traveling to North Korea

So who thinks the North Koreans would actually being doing us all a favor if they detained these people?:

The United States on Monday reiterated a warning against traveling to North Korea as dozens of American and other activists plan to walk across the heavily fortified inter-Korean border in an effort to promote peace on the divided peninsula.

About 30 female activists from around the world, including American activist Gloria Steinem and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire from Ireland, plan to march from North Korea to the South via the demilitarized zone (DMZ) that bisects the two Koreas to mark the May 24 International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament.

They say they hope to help unite Korean families separated by the border, reduce military tensions between the two Koreas, and help ultimately end the Korean War by replacing the 1953 Armistice Agreement with a permanent peace treaty.  [Yonhap]

You can read more at the link, but the North Koreans won’t detain these people because they are useful idiots for the Kim regime.  As usual these people justify their actions by saying they are trying to promote peace.  It looks to me like they are more concerned about promoting themselves.

Leftists to Want to Walk Across the DMZ

Like I said before when this plan was first hatched if the North Koreans allow this to happen there is some kind of propaganda value for them effectively making these people useful idiots for the Kim regime:

Gloria Steinem and 30 other women including two Nobel peace laureates have announced plans for a rare walk across the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea to call for reunification.

The DMZ is the world’s most fortified border, with the two countries still technically at war. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers face off across the heavily mined zone.

Organizers of the effort called WomenCrossDMZ.org said on Wednesday they hope for 30 women to cross from North Korea to South Korea on May 24, which is International Women’s Day for Disarmament.

The walk also marks the 70th anniversary of the division of the Korean Peninsula.

The women say they are still seeking approval from both countries and the United Nations. [The Guardian]
