Lawyer Files Complaint Against Kim Yo-jong for Blowing Up Inter-Korean Liaison Office

I think it is safe to say that investigation this will go nowhere:

South Korean prosecutors have begun an investigation into North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sister and the North’s military chief on charges of blowing up an inter-Korean liaison office in Kaesong last month, officials said Thursday.

The unprecedented and symbolic probe into Kim Yo-jong, the sister now serving as the first vice department director of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, and Army Gen. Pak Jong-chon, chief of the General Staff of the North Korean army, came after a South Korean lawyer filed a criminal complaint against them over the Kaesong office demolition in mid-June.

Seoul-based lawyer Lee Kyung-jae filed the complaint against the North Korean figures with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office on July 8, and the case was assigned to the office’s public investigation division on Monday, according to the officials informed of the case.

Uzbekistan First Lady Thanks Actress Lee Young-ae for Donating Copyright to K-Drama

One of my favorite Korean actresses Lee Young-ae has been recognized by the First Lady of Uzbekistan:

Korean actress Lee Young-ae shakes hands with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a state banquet hosted by President Moon Jae-in at Cheong Wa Dae in November 2017. Uzbek First Lady Ziroatkhon Hoshimova, fourth from left, sent a letter recently to thank Lee for her role in “Saimdang, Memoir of Colors,” a big-budget K-drama she starred in in 2017, now being broadcast for free in Uzbekistan. Yonhap

Lee Young-ae, one of Korea’s most famous actresses, has received a letter of gratitude from the first lady of Uzbekistan recently in recognition of a favor she did for Uzbek television viewers.

According to her agency, Ziroatkhon Hoshimova, the wife of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, thanked Lee in the letter in June for helping provide “Saimdang, Memoir of Colors,” a big-budget K-drama she starred in in 2017, for free broadcast in Uzbekistan by donating the copyright.

The first lady wrote that she was “very pleased to hear about Lee’s role” in helping the soap opera’s broadcasting in Uzbekistan.

She called Lee’s action “a beautiful one” and that it is “more meaningful in the time of COVID-19 pandemic.”

USFK Identifies 14 More Personnel who Tested Positive for Coronavirus

I think this is demonstrating how widespread coronavirus now is within the U.S. population with so many people testing positive for it after arrival in Korea:

51st Fighter Wing medical staff screen an airman for coronavirus symptoms before he enters Osan Air Base, South Korea, Friday, April 3, 2020.

Fourteen more Americans affiliated with the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) have tested positive for the new coronavirus upon arrival in South Korea, the U.S. military said Thursday, amid growing concerns over a surge in imported virus cases.

USFK has seen a marked increase in the number of COVID-19 patients among newly assigned service members and related personnel in recent weeks along with the fast spread of the virus in the U.S.

The latest cases brought the total number of USFK-related infections to 88. Of them, 52 were reported in July.

Of the 14 new patients, 12 were service members and two were dependents, and they tested positive after arriving here between July 9 and 15, according to USFK.

Nine soldiers and two family members arrived at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers south of Seoul, on a U.S. government-chartered flight. The remaining three arrived at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, from their home country on commercial flights, it added.

Seoul Mayor Accused of Sexually Harassing Employee for 4 Years and Government Officials Ignored the Victim’s Complaints

The Seoul government is saying they will investigate the sexual misconduct allegations against former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon who committed suicide last week. Will see how serious this investigation is, but more details about his conduct is now coming out:

Seoul city government’s spokesman Hwang In-sik speaks during a press conference in the city government building, Wednesday./ Yonhap

The city government was responding to growing calls to uncover the truth about the allegations and seek justice for its employee, as the police are not expected to conduct an investigation.

Hwang also said the city will ensure the victim doesn’t suffer any secondary damage.

“It will be a priority for city officials to prevent secondary damage inflicted on the victim. We will not tolerate city employees who reveal her personal information or make personal attacks.”

Through her lawyer, the victim claimed Park had pushed for unwanted physical contact and made sexual advances toward her, sending her inappropriate photos and text messages for almost four years.

The victim’s lawyer also said the victim had reached out to the city government for help before reporting the matter to the police, as she was ignored.

The city government previously said it had not been aware of the allegations before Park’s death. But, that left the victim’s lawyer asking how Park had learned about the police complaint before being officially notified by them. It is illegal for a government official to leak work-related information. The police and Cheong Wa Dae said they hadn’t told Park of the complaint.

Here is some good news for Korean students looking to study in the U.S.:

The United States government rescinded its controversial decision to revoke foreign student visas whose courses move online due to coronavirus, a federal judge said Tuesday.

The universities of Harvard and MIT, with the support of a number of other institutions, had taken legal action against the move that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on July 6.

“The government has agreed to rescind” the decision as well as any implementation of the directive, Judge Allison Burroughs said in a brief hearing.
