Prosecutors Want to Send Yoon Seok-youl’s Mother-in-Law to Jail

I have no idea if Yoon’s mother-in-law is guilty of these accusations, but why did it take six years and when Yoon’s may be seeking the presidency for these charges to happen? I think this is arguably payback on Yoon for going after the corruption surrounding the former Justice Minister Cho Kuk and his family:

A team of state prosecutors requested Monday that a local court sentence the mother-in-law of Yoon Seok-youl, a former top prosecutor, to three years in jail.

The 74-year-old, identified only by her surname Choi, is accused of violating the Medical Service Act in connection with her involvement in a nursing facility.

She illegally received about 2.29 billion won (US$20 million) from the National Health Insurance Service while running the nursing hospital in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, from 2013-2015 along with three business partners, according to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office.

Belgian Ambassador to Be Recalled Over Wife’s Slapping Incident in Seoul

It seemed like with all the negative publicity it was only a matter of time before this happened:

Belgium will bring home its ambassador to South Korea amid public anger over his wife’s alleged assault of two employees at a shop in Seoul.

The Belgium Embassy said the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sophie Wilmès, decided it was in the best interest of bilateral relations to end Ambassador Peter Lescouhier’s tenure this summer.

He has been the envoy in Seoul for three years. The embassy didn’t provide a specific date on when Lescouhier’s term will end or name a replacement.

While Lescouhier served his country with dedication, “the current situation doesn’t allow him to further carry out his role in a serene way,” the embassy said on Monday.

U.S. Summit Raises President Moon’s Approval Rating to 42%

It is surprising how much of a jolt President Moon got from his summit with President Biden:

President Moon Jae-in’s job approval rating rebounded to above 40 percent for the first time in seven weeks thanks to positive reaction toward his recent summit deal with U.S. President Joe Biden, according to a new poll released Thursday.

In the survey conducted jointly by four polling agencies on 1,008 people over the age of 18 from Monday to Wednesday, Moon’s job approval rating stood at 42 percent.

Vaccines Hard to Find for Non-Priority People in South Korea

The U.S. went through this same problem of trying to avoid vaccine doses going to waste through missed appointments:

An official of a general hospital in the central administrative city of Sejong posts a notice on how to reserve leftover vaccines on May 27, 2021. It said two citizens got vaccinated with remaining doses from missed appointments on the day. (Yonhap)

South Korea on Thursday launched an innovative pilot program to help non-priority people receive AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines made available from canceled appointments, but the so-called leftover vaccines can hardly be found in reality, many citizens said.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) began the test operation of the search and reservation system for AstraZeneca vaccines available from appointment no-shows through the country’s largest web portal Naver and top mobile messenger KakaoTalk at 1 p.m.

BTS Inspired Meal Comes to McDonald’s

I am not a fan of Chicken McNuggets, but for those who are here is another meal option for you:

The “BTS meal” includes a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, medium fries and Coke as well as two new dipping sauces — sweet chili and Cajun flavors — inspired by recipes from South Korea, where the boy band is from.

The meal is the first celebrity collaboration to go on sale globally, McDonald said.

The limited edition meal went on sale in South Korea, the U.S. and 10 additional countries, and it will be available in nearly 50 countries by next month, it said.
