South Korea Has 44 People Out of 4.6 Million Vaccinations Catch COVID-19

I am not sure why this is such big news when it has never been claimed the COVID vaccines were 100% effective:

South Korea has confirmed 44 cases of the so-called vaccine “breakthrough” COVID-19 infections, health authorities said Monday, as the country speeds up its inoculation campaign.

As of last Thursday, a total of 44 people had tested positive for the novel coronavirus even after being fully vaccinated, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

A “breakthrough case” refers to when a person is diagnosed with COVID-19 two weeks after being administered with the full-dose regimen.

Among the 44 cases, 26 patients had received the Pfizer vaccine, while 18 were administered with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

You can read more at the link, but according to the article 4.6 million Koreans have two shots of the vaccine. 44 people getting infected with COVID out of 4.6 million is pretty good odds. Plus what is not mentioned in the article is how sick these people got. Were they asymptomatic? This seems like important information to share to further help people decide if they want to take the vaccine or not.

Korean Anti-Corruption Secretary Resigns Over Land Speculation Allegations

You would think they would have vetted this guy for property speculation before giving him the job:

Kim Gi-pyo

The presidential secretary for anti-corruption, Kim Gi-pyo, has offered to resign, the presidential office said Sunday, following allegations of real estate speculation involving multimillion dollar loans.

President Moon Jae-in also immediately accepted his resignation, according to Park Soo-hyun, Cheong Wa Dae’s senior secretary for public communication.

“Presidential secretary Kim Gi-pyo has expressed his views that, although he did not acquire the real estate for purposes of speculation, he should no longer be a burden to the state affairs given the public’s expectations of a public servant’s ethical and social responsibilities,” Park said at a briefing.

Is it Time for a US Forces Taiwan?

That is what think tankers are advocating for:

If the Army is serious about countering the Chinese military in the Pacific, it needs to permanently stationan Armored Brigade Combat Team on Taiwan, according to some think tankers.

That type of basing decision would likely abandon the current policy of strategic ambiguity toward Taiwan, which intentionally leaves it unclear as to whether Americans would defend the island in a cross-strait conflict. Uncertain about their superpower backers, Taiwanese leaders are less likely to unilaterally declare independence and China is less inclined to hurry to war.

Active Duty U.S. and ROK Army Captains Marry for the First Time

I am surprised this hasn’t happened before now, but congratulations to these two officers on their marriage:

U.S. Army Capt. Miles Gabrielson and South Korean army Capt. Ha Neul, both assigned to Camp Casey north of Seoul, married on Feb. 20, 2021. The union is the first between active-duty officers in the U.S. and Korean armies, according to the 2nd Infantry Division.

South Korean army Capt. Ha Neul laughed as she recalled meeting her husband, U.S. Army Capt. Miles Gabrielson, last year.

“We have a very different memory over that,” she said during a recent interview with the newlyweds at this base 40 miles north of Seoul. “He thought I was smiling at him.”

While relationships between Americans and Koreans are not uncommon, the couple’s Feb. 20 union became the first of its kind: a marriage between active-duty officers in the U.S. and Korean armies, according to the 2nd Infantry Division.

The bond between Ha, 31, and Gabrielson, 29, both artillery officers, formed in May 2020 after the pair was tasked with one of the most mundane duties in the military: creating a PowerPoint presentation.
