Suspect Admits to Attempted Rape and Murder of Uijongbu Woman

It is good that the police have arrested the man who murdered a Uijongbu woman on a mountain outside the city:

The suspect in the murder on Mount Sapae in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, changed his story and admitted he initially tried to rape the victim.

Uijeongbu police announced on Tuesday that they found problems with the suspected culprit’s denial of rape in the initial questioning.

“While conducting analysis at the crime scene and reconstructing the crime, we found some contradictions with the culprit’s testimony,” an official in charge said. “We then used a lie detector to find out that he actually had attempted to rape the victim before killing and robbing her.”

The suspected culprit, surnamed Jeong, confessed to having initially denied raping the victim in order to avoid heavier punishment. The 45-year-old turned himself in on Friday after strangling a 55-year-old woman to death and robbing her of cash on Mount Sapae on June 7. The body of the woman was found on Thursday morning by hikers.

According to police, Jeong brought a bottle of soju to the mountain in misery after finding out he only had 14,000 won ($11.87) left in his pocket. While roaming the mountain drunk, he allegedly spotted the victim sitting on a bench by herself and approached her from behind with the intention of raping her. Police say that after strangling her with his left arm and punching her in the head twice, he undressed her from the waist up and pulled down her pants, but when he realized the victim was dead he ran away with her wallet, which contained 15,000 won and a credit card.   [Joong Ang Ilbo]

Pagoda CEO Given No Jail Time Despite Embezzlement Conviction

Despite being convicted of embezzling nearly a million dollars, the CEO of the largest foreign language business in South Korea, Pagoda has received no jail time with her entire sentence being suspended:

Park Kyung-sil

PAGODA Academy CEO Park Kyung-sil was found guilty of embezzlement and breach of trust, an appellate court said Tuesday.

The Seoul High Court sentenced the 61-year-old leader of Korea’s major foreign language institute to two-years-and-six months in prison with the term suspended for three years.

The ruling was made after the court reviewed the case at the request of the Supreme Court, which found faults with the grounds for the appellate court’s ruling.

Park was indicted in 2013 on charges of pocketing one billion won ($849,000) in corporate money and inflicting losses of 53 billion won on the company by mismanagement. She pled guilty to the embezzlement charge. [Korea Times]

Tweet of the Day: Pyongyang Folklore Village Bulldozed?

https://twitter.com/pearswick/status/742540088844783616

It was reportedly bulldozed because Kim Jong-un said it reminded him of his executed uncle Jang Song-taek.  Like many anonymous reports out of North Korea who knows?

Picture of the Day: Criminal Chinese Fishing Boats Detained In Incheon

Illegal Chinese fishing boats

The Manseok pier in South Korea’s western port city of Incheon is jam-packed with Chinese fishing boats on June 14, 2016. All the ships have been seized by the South Korean Coast Guard while illegally catching fish in the country’s territorial waters near the inter-Korean sea border in the West Sea. Illegal fishing by Chinese fishermen is a years-long troublesome issue in the country as it has severely damaged the livelihood of South Korean fishermen. (Yonhap)

Korean Man Faces Sentencing for Yasukuni Shrine Bombing

I hope they give this guy some serous jail time because if not this will just encourage other nut jobs to do the same thing.  I think this should be considered attempted murder because someone could have been killed by this bomb:

This file photo shows a South Korean man, identified only by his surname Chon, who has been indicted over the suspected bombing last year of a public restroom at a Tokyo war shrine. In his first court hearing at the Tokyo District Court on June 14, 2016, Chon admitted to his involvement in the bombing, news reports said. (Yonhap)

A South Korean man admitted Tuesday to his involvement in the suspected bombing last year of a public restroom at a Tokyo war shrine in his first court hearing at the Tokyo District Court, news reports said.

The 28-year-old suspect, identified only by his surname Chon, has been indicted on charges of breaking into the premises of Yasukuni Shrine on Nov. 23 and bombing the public restroom.

Chon was arrested in December shortly after voluntarily returning to Tokyo by plane.

In Tuesday’s hearing, prosecutors said Chon attempted to install an explosive device with a digital timer at the main hall of the shrine out of his discontent over the war-linked shrine that honors Japanese wartime leaders who were convicted as war criminals.

But he put it in the restroom instead after failing to do so due to tight security, they said.

Chon’s defense counsel reportedly asked the court to give him a reduced penalty as the incident is not a grave one as no one was injured and he has no chance of repeating the offense as he will find it difficult to enter Japan again down the road.  [Yonhap]

You can read the rest at the link, but the other nut jobs the anti-Korean activist group, Zaitokukai showed up to the hearing to protest against Chon and had a lot of bad things to say about Koreans in general.

North Korean Media Hopeful of a Trump Presidency

The Kim regime appears to be hoping that a future Trump presidency would in fact withdraw US troops from South Korea:

North Korean state media has praised US presidential hopeful Donald Trump, describing him as a “wise politician” and “far-sighted candidate” who could help unify the Korean peninsula.

An editorial in DPRK Today, an official media outlet, welcomed the Republican presidential candidate’s proposal to hold direct talks with Kim Jong-un, saying he could help bring about Pyongyang’s “Yankee go home” policy.

“There are many positive aspects to Trump’s ‘inflammatory policies’,” wrote Han Yong-mook, who described himself as a Chinese North Korean scholar.

“Trump said he will not get involved in the war between the South and the North, isn’t this fortunate from North Korea’ perspective?”

Analysts said that although the editorial was not officially from Pyongyang, it was sure to reflect thinking inside the regime.

“This is very striking,” said Aidan Foster-Carter of the University of Leeds. “Admittedly it is not exactly Pyongyang speaking, or at least not the DPRK government in an official capacity. But it is certainly Pyongyang flying a kite, or testing the waters.

“For the rest of us, this is a timely reminder – if it were needed – of just how completely Trump plans to tear up established US policy in the region.”

The editorial referred to Trump’s speech in March, in which he suggested he would withdraw US military forces from Seoul if South Korea did not increase spending on defence.

“Yes do it, now … Who knew that the slogan ‘Yankee Go Home’ would come true like this? The day when the ‘Yankee Go Home’ slogan becomes real would be the day of Korean Unification.”

The article urged Seoul not to increase defence spending so as to prompt a US withdrawal, and urged American voters not to choose the Democratic hopeful, Hillary Clinton.  [The Guardian]

ROK Police Say North Korean Hackers Did Not Access Classified Defense Documents

This is why classified information is not stored on an unclassified network because it is so easy for hackers to get access to it:

Hours after police revealed that North Korea gained access to a host of defense-related documents during a hacking attack in February, the South Korean military asserted that no military secrets were included in the leaked documents.

A military official said on Monday that most of the 42-thousand documents stolen from South Korea’s SK Networks and Korean Air by the North are already open to the public.

The leaked documents reportedly include the design map of the wing of the U.S. F-15 fighter jet and photos of parts of a medium altitude unmanned surveillance vehicle.

The compromised data of the U.S. F-15 fighter jet is said to be simple specifications of the jet’s external design such as its length and width, and has no relevance to South Korea’s F-15K.  The military said that the core part of the design of the medium altitude unmanned surveillance vehicle was not leaked.  [KBS World Radio]
