Young Kim Wins and Then Loses California Congressional Election

Well so much for Young Kim being the first Korean-American woman elected to Congress:

Republican candidate Young Kim, who was expected to become the first Korean-American woman elected to Congress, has been defeated by Democratic rival Gil Cisneros in California’s 39th district, a report said Saturday.

The South Korea-born politician took the lead in initial vote counting in the Nov. 6 election. But she lost to Cisneros by 1.6 percentage point as of 8:00 p.m. after mail-in ballots were counted, according to the Associated Press.

They competed to succeed Republican Ed Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in the district, which includes parts of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties and is two-thirds Asian and Latino.

Despite being home to former Republican President Richard Nixon and traditionally Republican, the district was won by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, in the 2016 presidential race.  [Yonhap]

It is amazing how long the vote counting has been going on for these races.

How Do Foreigners Make Friends in Korea?

That is the question a KBS World Radio host asked random foreigners recently in Itaewon:

For military personnel, what I recommend is to get to know the KATUSA personnel in your unit.  This will often lead to invites to go out or even visits their homes on the weekend.

Anyone have any tips on making Korean friends to share?

Gyeonggi Governor’s Wife Accused of False Online Rumor Spreading

It is interesting that the authorities are going after the wife of a political rival for allegedly spreading rumors online, but a coordinated online opinion rigging scandal for the President of Korea they quietly let go away:

The police have determined that a disputed Twitter account that spread false election rumors belongs to the wife of Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung.

The cyber unit at Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency said Saturday that it will ask prosecutors early next week to indict Kim Hye-gyeong on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.

A police official said details will not be disclosed to the media as Kim denies the charges and a legal battle is expected.

False information was posted on the Twitter account in question in April during the ruling Democratic Party’s primary race for the Gyeonggi governorship. The claim was damaging to her husband’s rival candidate.

The account also falsely claimed in late 2016 that then presidential hopeful Moon Jae-in’s son received employment favors.

The police analyzed some 40-thousand Tweets to identify the account’s owner and concluded that it belongs to the governor’s wife.  [KBS World Radio]

Samsung to Release Foldable Smartphone in March 2019

I am curious to see how durable and useful this foldable smartphone is going to be:

Samsung Electronics Co. plans to launch its first foldable smartphone in March, along with a fifth-generation (5G) network-powered Galaxy S10, industry sources said Monday.

According to the sources, the South Korean tech giant plans to unveil the flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone in February, followed by the presumed foldable Galaxy F and another edition of the Galaxy S10 that runs on the 5G network in March.

The outlook came after Samsung Electronics President Koh Dong-jin, who heads the mobile business, said last week that the company will release a foldable smartphone within the first half of 2019. Koh said the shipment volume of the foldable smartphone will be at least 1 million.

Industry watchers said Samsung is expected to showcase the upcoming foldable smartphone in the Mobile World Congress in February, ahead of the official launch in the following month.

The much-awaited foldable smartphone, however, is not expected to support the 5G network.

While the price of the foldable smartphone has not been decided, industry watchers said it may cost around 2 million won (US$1,770). The steep price is expected to limit sales.

Samsung said the upcoming foldable smartphone will fold inward, and will sport a 7.4-inch screen when unfolded and have a 4.6-inch display like a regular smartphone when folded. [Yonhap]

Yongsan Garrison to Close Its Schools at the End of the Academic Year

One more thing shutting down further signaling the imminent closure of Yongsan Garrison:

U.S. elementary, middle and high schools on Yongsan will close at the end of this school year as the military population shifts to its new headquarters south of Seoul, officials said Friday.

Seoul American Elementary School and Seoul American Middle High School have been run for decades to serve the children of soldiers and others stationed in South Korea.

But Yongsan’s population has declined sharply as U.S. Forces Korea and the other commands moved to Camp Humphreys, which has its own schools, as part of a long-delayed relocation plan.

“The decision and request by the command to no longer operate schools in Seoul is based on the pace and requirements of the Yongsan transformation efforts,” the military said in a press release.  [Stars & Stripes]

Japanese citizens denounce anti-Korea protest

Japanese citizens rally on Nov. 13, 2018, at a subway station near the Tokyo Dome, where K-pop sensation BTS was to stage a concert on the day, in a counterprotest to a demonstration bashing Korea.
