At a news conference, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, one of the nation’s two largest umbrella unions, declared a plan to set up the statue in front of the Japanese mission next May Day. The historic operation, led by MacArthur and code-named Operation Chromite, was staged from Sept. 15-19, 1950, and turned the tide of the war in favor of the U.N. troops by successfully cutting the North’s supply and communication lines.
