Korean Government "Tense" Over East Sea Issue

The Chosun has an article today that has all you would possibly ever wanted to know about the greatest pressing issue of our time, no not Dokdo, but the Sea of Japan / East Sea issue:

The government is tense ahead of the International Hydrographic Organization conference in Monaco next Monday, which is expected to decide the official name of the body of water dividing Korea and Japan. The body is to settle whether a new edition of "Limits of Oceans and Seas," a guide book for map makers around the globe, will use both "East Sea," Korea’s name, and "Sea of Japan." In a closed-door meeting on Thursday, Korean officials reportedly stressed the need to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

I find it quite interesting that the Korean government is tense over this East Sea / Sea of Japan nonsense, but could care less about 485 South Korean civilians kidnapped by the North Koreans or the many North Korean defectors trying to come to South Korea which the ROK government continues to be indifferent if not unhelpful to.

Using the logic the Korean government is using to lobby the IHO to have the Sea of Japan permanently called the East Sea doesn’t that mean that the IHO would also have to change the name of the Korea Strait that runs between Korea and Japan?

Brilliant solution! They would crap themselves, and it would serve them right, the children. I wonder if anyone at the IHO has a sense of humor/justice…

Yes, it's Corean Straight, duh. 😉

They also need to change the Korean Bay (AKA West Korean Bay) as well.

Personally, I like this image that shows a number of seas on the area that owe their names to a country; all of which Korea is silent about, because that country isn't Japan.

1. Korean Straight
2. East China Sea
3. Philippine Sea

In short, Koreans like to fight hypothetical war against Japan and defeat it.

It is their dream.

It obviously shows the psychological trauma of Koreans who were colonized by Japanese even without resistance war and “liberated” by US even without their own independence war.

They feel hollowed out to admire the “independence fighters” who ended up not getting independence by themselves

They like to fight by themselves with Japanese and defeat it.
That’s it.

But why do Japanese have to engage in the childish argument of Koreans to overcome their inferior complex against Japanese?

I hope everyone realizes even if this board comes back with a decision to label it both names in the future, the contreversy will not be over. The next battle will be whose name is on top and whose on bottom or whose is on the left (and thus read first) and whose on the right…and they had better make sure both names are exactly the same heighth…

"The next battle will be whose name is on top and whose on bottom………"

I read your post on your blog despairing over the situation of Marmot.

http://usinkorea.org/blog1/?p=381

The similar troubles could happen on all of blogs and boards if they treat with Korean news.

If someone criticizes Koreans, the blog must be filled with verbal attacks from Koreans and Korean Americans.

I agree with you that such a childish argument is absurd.

However, their voice is so loud that it is dangerous to leave it.

After Koreans' broadcasting about comfort women controversy again and again, some Americans have started to believe that Japanese government ordered to coerce those women, haven't they?

If Koreans insist to change the name of “Japanese sea” and Japanese keep quite, the name would be changed as Koreans hope.

If Koreans distort story and criticize Japanese, Japanese must speak out even if it is absurd and bothering.

When Koreans assert USFK tank accident is a murder, you try to deny it, don't you?

But, I agree with you. It is absurd……

"He’s feeding them a favorite topic."

Korean news are filled with flammable topics every time.

Anti-Japan, anti-USA, anti-China, etc, etc.

If he tries to avoid such kind of topics, it would not be K-blog anymore.

When I was in Kuwait, we called the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Gulf, out of deference to our hosts who consider the Gulf to be Arabian not Persian.

But the Gulf oil states don't seem to mind that the rest of the world calls it the Persian Gulf and even with all the money they have in their possession, they aren't lobbying the IHO to change the name.

Jion,

In that comment here, I simply meant that even if the map makers agree to label the sea with both names, it will not be over. There will be an argument about whose name is placed above the other or on the left — a fight over which name has a "higher place of promenance" or "honor" — like Hollywood actos and actresses argue over whose name goes where and how it looks on the movie posters and billboards…

I've lived here a long time, and worked in Japan quite a bit. Koreans are petty, little people. I've spent a good chunk of my life protecting these fucks, and I think I am starting to regret it.

GI Korea,

I was teasing you because of the new commenters who are monopolizing Korea and Japan-related threads.
