We Yanks use the Japanese name Joro spider for those. In Korea, they’re called mudang geomi/무당거미, or shaman spiders. The adults are usually visible around the tail-end of summer, and you see them all through the fall before the weather finally gets too cold. They live about a year, and they’ve become an invasive species in the States. They’re orb-weavers that may or may not be evolutionary cousins of the orb-weavers we Americans are familiar with.

“……..used spider fights to boost his soldiers’ morale.”

I hope Fortune 500 companies are paying attention.

Mushrooms for the depression.

Spider death matches to increase morale.

By the way, we always called them banana spiders around my unit’s motor pool on Camp Casey but I think we were misinformed.

I stand corrected. AI says:

…they are not Joro spiders. While both are large, brightly colored, yellow-and-black orb-weavers native to Japan, the Kumo Gassen tournament exclusively uses the Banded Garden Spider (Argiope amoena), historically known in Japan as the Kogane-gumo (golden spider).

Wait. There are different species of spiders?

I thought they were all called “Ah Hell No” and “Nope!” for short.

Keep your icky spiders.

…though when I have lived in less hermetically sealed conditions, i always brought in spiders and let them set up shop in bathroom ceiling corners.

Spiders stay up there in the web where they belong. Mosquitoes and flies come to me.

Distant ick is better than fùck all over you.
