In general sex (not just BDSM): UK data shows it’s fairly common among younger adults. A 2024–2025 Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS) survey found ~35% of 16–34 year olds reported being choked/strangled during consensual sex, with higher rates for women as recipients.
More than 35 percent of young women in the UK say they engage in breath play. Just sayin. It’s very likely that is the context here, because there is absolutely no possibility a convening authority (the person with the ultimate say in these court martial trials…not the jury that doesn’t need a unanimous vote to convict, only a majority btw) would let a person who unlawfully and with intent to harm strangled a woman into unconsciousness and then committed a sex act with her get away with a light sentence.
