No problem! Copy the American model of wretched airports, deteriorating shopping malls, bus stations filled with junkies.
Japan’s problem is they thought they could spend their way out of the lost decade by building unnecessary infrastructure. Now they have to maintain it.
I love the Tokyo subway and associated tunnel complexes that wind around existing infrastructure. Most of it looks like a vision of the future from 1980. It is well maintained… but some things just show their age. All of Japan looks like they are trying to recapture the 1980s. Domestic tech equipment has a very clear 1980s design esthetic. They still use fax machines.
Much of the developed world is facing aging infrastructure.
