Picture of the Day: Joseon Era Ship Visits Japan
A replica ship of the Joseon Tongsinsa, a diplomatic delegation sent by the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) to Japan, sails off a port in Tomonoura, Hiroshima Prefecture, western Japan, on May 9, 2025, on its voyage for the western Japan city of Osaka as part of events to mark the 60th anniversary this year of diplomatic ties between South Korea and Japan, in this photo released by the National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage. The dispatch of the Korean envoys began in 1607 for political reasons to promote peace after a destructive seven-year war between the two sides, but its functions were later transformed into something more cultural. A total of 12 such teams of envoys were dispatched until 1811. (Yonhap)
