Former President Moon Indicted for Corruption Involving His Former Son-In-Law
It looks like former President Moon may continue the tradition of former Korean presidents going to jail:
Former President Moon Jae-in was indicted without detention Thursday on charges of bribery, according to the Jeonju District Prosecutor’s Office.
Moon has been accused of allowing his former son-in-law to receive preferential treatment in securing a job with an airline. Almost 220 million won ($154,000) in salary and relocation expenses to Thailand were paid between July 2018 and April 2020, which constituted a de facto bribe to the former president, according to the prosecution.
Prosecutors launched an investigation into former President Moon Jae-in’s alleged involvement in the case after Seoul-based civic group Justice People filed a complaint in December 2021, alleging a possible quid pro quo involving Moon, his former son-in-law, identified by the surname Seo, and Lee Sang-jik — a former two-term lawmaker from the then-ruling Democratic Party and founder of budget airline Eastar Jet.
Prosecutors pinpointed Lee as the source of the alleged bribe and confirmed that Seo’s appointment as executive director of Thai Eastar Jet was made despite his lack of airline industry experience and the company’s financial struggles. A separate civil affairs team under Moon’s presidential office was involved in the process, the prosecution claims.
“Seo frequently left his post for extended periods, flew to South Korea or worked remotely. He did not provide proper labor befitting his position as the executive director. But Seo received a monthly salary of 8 million won, almost twice the salary of the airline’s CEO,” the Jeonju District Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release.
You can read more at the link, but this was clearly a quid pro quo for his son-in-law to get this job he was not qualified for and apparently put little effort into. With that said imagine if the U.S. had the same corruption laws as Korea? Former president Joe Biden would be getting prosecuted for all the money his son has been making off of his dad’s name and position. Instead you have a whole political party and media establishment covering for him.
His son-in-law should be charged. Why is Moon getting charged? What was he supposed to do here to prevent his son-in-law from accepting this post? Your in-law accepted a job he wasn’t qualified for, so now you’re liable for breaking the “law”.
This sounds like a politically motivated charge.

Imagine that, being charged for ‘bribary’ for your ex-son-in-law getting a job as an unqualified candidate. But they found no direct money interchanging between Moon and the company.

German here. True story and quite actual: My brother (64), former German army major, now retired, travelled 2 weeks ago with his wife and his 12-year-old granddaughter (during easter-shool vacation here in Germany) to the USA. He is a passionate hiker and, after “falling in love” to “Appalachia” during a visit in the 2010s, he has always dreamed of hiking the “Appalachian Trail “piece-by-piece with his wife (62) and his granddaughter (12 years old). He got ALL the necessary papers, VISA from the german embassy in Berlin (he is an german retired major with a passion for paperworks and burocracy and rules and regulations), he got all that electronic stuff, hotel reservations with print-outs, etc. etc. – then they arrived with Lufthansa direct-flight from Frankfurt/Germany to John F. Kennedy International Airport/New York – and here he, and he only, was stopped by in the terminal by an officer of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – this officer considered that his german Passport had to many “stamps” from “strange countries”! (As german officer of the german Bundewehr my brother served 29 months in Afghanistan and, organising logistic support for german troops in AFG, he had to travel around in neighbouring countries) – he tried to explain this, but the local officer of ICE wouldnt hear… he was then arrested, isolated from his family, had no right to use it´s smartphone, his baggage was controlled, his smartphone and his notebook was controlled, he was then detained and brought to the ICE New York City Field Office, 26 Federal Plaza, New York where he was “interviewed” for further 3 hours – then he had the right to “make a call”… and he was clever enough to call an old friend – Major General US Army – and asked him for help… 30 minutes later, the “problems” with his passport was “solved” and he was brought back to JFK via limousine…
– but that was not the end of the story!
One week later, travelling through West Virginia by car, in Fayetteville, West Virginia, they shopped in a Walmart Superstore – and the 3 spoke German during shopping. That “enraged” a local MAGA-“Lady” – it´s AMERICA – here you have to speak AMERICAN! (by the way, we here in Europe all speak this language, “English”!) A discussion started, the MAGA-“Lady” called some friends for “support”, and then the local Sheriff’s department! – and it ended for my brother, his wife, and the 12-year-old granddaughter in the local sheriff’s office. And thanks to the fact that it was Friday afternoon, no attorney of state or judge on duty, they were, to “simplify things” – arrested and put in jail till Monday 10 am… nearly 3 days in local jail in rural America was a great experience for all 3! Mondays the local “authorities” decided “that there is no evidence of any crime committed” nor “any public interest in legal prosecution” and they could leave prison – after beeing charged for food and water for 3 days detention… and BONUS: During the 3 days, the rental car they used with all their stuff was stolen from the Walmart Superstore parking! Adding more troubles….
My brother and his family then decided on “emergency evacuation” out of this “friendly country” and rushed to the next airport and changed their flight tickets to get the next possible flight out of the USA and – how he named it – “back to civilisation”! For him, there is one thing sure: Now, in the USA, the MAGA-idiots are ruling at will and, no matter how beautiful the region and nature there is, USA – Never again! Too much “adventure” for a retired German ex-army guy in “MAGA-land”, or how he calls it now, the “FUBAR-States-of-America”!
Seems to me that the USA of today does not want to be visited by any kind of “foreigners” at all… not even when they are spending as tourists a lot of money in the USA…
