South Korean Negotiators Say Beef and Rice Markets Will Not be Impacted By U.S. Trade Deal

This is not surprising that the ROK would not further open up these markets. Long time Korea watchers may remember what happened back in 2008 with the U.S. beef protests. President Lee is not going to have that happen again on his watch:

South Korea’s markets for rice and beef will not be further opened under a tariff deal with the United States, a senior presidential official said Sunday.

Kim Yong-beom, the presidential chief of staff for policy, made the remarks during an appearance on a KBS news program amid lingering uncertainty over the details of the tariff deal.

For South Koreans’ sake I hope it was not promised to Trump and they’re going back on it.

He generally dislikes those who try to change the deal after it’s inked.

It looks like and the Setnaffarians haven’t read Trump’s social media post.

Trump simply posted “they will accept American product including Cars and Trucks, Agriculture, etc”

As many well-informed people know, South Korea signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the U.S. during the Roh Moo-hyun administration.

Since then, American goods like GM trucks, Washington cherries, Florida oranges, and U.S. Angus beef have flowed into Korea with minimal barriers.

Of course, when it comes to imported cars, Korean consumers still gravitate toward Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Tesla over GM—but that’s a topic for another day.

And if you’ve actually lived in Korea, you’d know that Toyota and Honda import vehicles built in their U.S. factories to benefit from the KORUS FTA. So not every “American car” is built by an American company.

Bottom line: Trump is claiming credit for a trade framework that’s been in place for over a decade.

And despite the claim made by the fake news and misinformation spreading and the Setnaffarians, there doesn’t appear to be any new deal expanding access to Korea’s rice or beef markets.

Well, Korea Thing, now you can stop whining.

Trump got nothing from Korea so he isn’t an unfair bully and all the other silliness you accused him of.

Of note, you do manage to whine no matter the outcome of any issue… so…

Ah yes.

ChickenHead agrees that what I say is true and correct but don’t want to admit it.
