Picture of the Day: European Industrial Machinery Pictured in North Korea in Violation of Sanctions

ABB machinery in N. Korea
ABB machinery in N. KoreaIn this photo, provided by the Korean Central News Agency on Nov. 19, 2019, the logo (in the red circle) of ABB Group, a Swiss-Swedish multinational corporation, is seen on equipment at a newly built fish-processing factory in the North’s eastern port of Tongchon, which North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (in white clothes) inspected. It’s unclear whether the Zurich-based company’s machinery in North Korea is in violation of U.N. Resolution 2397, adopted on Dec. 22, 2017. The resolution completely bans all U.N. member nations from exporting industrial machines to the North. (Yonhap)

Swiss and Swedes have a fine tradition of using their neutrality status to profit from conflict…..

Anybody care to guess they purpose of a robotic arm in a fish processing factory?

It is not at all clear in the picture what it is supposed to be doing.

Why CH, it’s obviously used to install the laser beams on the tiny heads of the baby sharks…

It is a pallet stacking robot… but it is not really set up like other such robots I have seen… and it is unclear to me what it is supposed to be doing.

In fact, a number of things don’t make sense in that picture.

But I have never seen a fish processing factory before.

IIRC such machines from that company were pictured in North Korea before latest round of sanctions and they could have bought used/outdated models.

So, translating above, nK got the machines from China.
