Moon Administration Plans to Decrease Number of ROK Military General Officer By Up to 18%

This reduction is likely caused by the bad behavior some ROK generals have been accused of in recent years.  Regardless this is a huge drop in the number of general officers:

The Ministry of National Defense is pushing for a massive reduction in the number of generals as part of a military reform plan, government sources said Sunday.

The ministry is said to be preparing for a plan to gradually lower the quota of generals starting this year, possibly by 70-80, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. Currently, there are about 430 generals in the South Korean troops.

The Moon Jae-in government pledged to slim down the bloated top brass of the military. The previous Lee Myung-bak government had planned in 2011 to reduce the number of generals by 60, or 15 percent, by 2020. The plan was revised down to 40 under his successor Park Geun-hye.  [Yonhap]

“This reduction is likely caused by the bad behavior some ROK generals have been accused of in recent years.”

It wouldn’t make sense to do that for punitive reasons. They would only decide to do it after they’ve decided they don’t need them. As they say, “There are no mission essential people, only mission essential positions.”

They must have decided to flatten their leadership hierarchy. The USAF did something like that 25-30 years ago when they did some major reorganizations which was supposed to reduce the number of general officers. For example, before that, a Wing Commander was an O-7 position, after that it became an O-6 position.

True JoeC.
Unfortunately, now they don’t have enough O6s to fill positions.
Retirements aren’t getting approved. I’m not sure how much productivity they expect to get out of a person who served 24 years and wants out (especially if he hasn’t been assigned a wing and isn’t on any future list for promotion), but it’s happening.
Time to puff out that belly and fail the tape measure test!

First there was a coup d’etat by the supreme court, now there is a bloodless purge of the officer ranks. Reminds me of when Stalin purged his generals. The quietest seizing of power ever….

SaddM, Nasser, and hundreds of similar cses were Colonels, not generals. And Stalun was merely the “Secretary” of the “Central Committee” when he took over. As witb it being importa t who counts the votes, it’s important who writes up what was discussed and decided at the meetings.
