Executive Order Allows Defense Department to Recall Retirees to Active Duty
If you are retired military and especially a pilot and you thought you were through with taking mandatory transgender training, SHARP training, cyber security training, etc. think again:
The Air Force says it doesn’t plan on using new flexibility under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump to address a pilot shortage by recalling retired pilots.
Ann Stefanek, the chief of Air Force media operations, said Sunday the added power provided by Trump is appreciated but the Air Force does not “currently intend to recall retired pilots.”
Trump last Friday signed the order to address what the Pentagon says is a serious pilot shortage.
A Pentagon spokesman says the Air Force is currently short about 1,500 pilots, and had indicated that the Secretary of Defense would allow the Secretary of the Air Force to recall up to 1,000 retired pilots for up to three years. [Stars & Stripes]
The executive order also allows the military to call up other officers from other military branches off of retirement as well. Just like in past conflicts I only see this happening if a conflict with North Korea appear imminent.
Yikes! What a precedent! I guess I may have to start packing my seabag! Korea (or Japan) here I come! Perhaps I should wait for the war to officially begin though. Hehehehe. Actually, I am probably well to the bottom of people the Navy would likely call back but there’s always that possibility. I do live close by! Hehehe.
It’s easy to get out of the training. Just say “I’m with Her.”
She didn’t need that silly training, so why should you?
This sucks, but I doubt it will be non-voluntary. There are a lot of young ‘uns that want to be pilots. They closed down the production line and forced a lot of good people out (sequestration on top of it led to a cascading snowball effect). There are plenty of guys flying for commuter airlines who would probably like the chance to fly for the USAF again.
Course, if they bring them back to be RPA guys….now THAT would be a crap pie.
No currency to go back to the airlines when they’re done.
No word yet on whether Mr. Quaid’s been tapped for duty…

I’m a member of the National Language Service Corps (NLSC) as a Burmese & Korean linguist. This is a program run under the same part of DOD that administers DLI. But in the 6 years I’ve been in the program, it has never transitioned from being run by Lockheed contractors to being run by full-time professionals. However, members of NLSC are no-shit federal employees on an on-call/as-needed basis. I would have thought that NLSC would be alerting Korling members to get ready to mobilize, but no dice. NLSC as I’ve experienced it is a good idea poorly executed, if the idea was to create a pool of linguists that could be mobilized in time of need.
Or maybe they just haven’t notified you, “Bob”…
