Defense Analyst Claims that Camp Humphreys Can Be Destroyed By North Korean Rockets

Really nothing surprising here, North Korea has long been able to target Camp Humphreys with ballistic missiles, rockets just give them another way to attack the base:

The new U.S. Pyeongtaek Garrison is vulnerable to North Korea’s rocket and missile attacks possibly topped with chemical and biological warheads, a noted American defense analyst told The Korea Times Friday.

“The new North Korean 300mm rocket launchers would be able to reach Pyeongtaek,” said Bruce Bennett, a senior defense researcher at the Rand Corp.

It was a contingency that the U.S. failed to anticipate in the early 2000s when the integrated U.S. base was planned, the Korea expert added. Pyeongtaek is located 100 kilometers from the southernmost area of the North Korean side on the inter-Korean border and is outside the range of the North’s 7,000 artillery pieces located there.

But the latest 300mm rocket launchers can cover the distance and hit the U.S. base and what is also worrisome is they are reloadable, he said.

The North’s theater ballistic missiles also pose a threat to the base where key elements of the U.S. forces here are being moved to. “The North has 100 launchers for these missiles,” he said, citing a ROK military whitepaper. “We have significant uncertainties with regard to their number and payloads.” The North is said to possess large quantities of chemical and biological weapons that are deliverable by their projectiles.  [Korea Times]

What is new with the 300mm MRL is its accuracy, its mobility, and ability to rapidily fire multiple projectiles at the target (1 truck x 8 rockets x 6 launchers in a battery=48 rockets impacting…then 18 launchers in a BN =864 rounds on target), and the difficulty of shotting down a rocket vs shooting down a ballstic missile. Probability hitting the a rocket is a lot lower, and then try hitting 864 as they rain down. Warheads vary from HE, ICM to Chemical… Have a nice day.

It’s still information that needs to be stated and restated to counter the rhetoric from the armchair chickenhawks with the impression that military conflict with North Korea could be done quickly and cleanly.

With this new information, they should work on a relocation plan to move everything down to Daegu :silly:

That won’t work. One of the main reasons they moved everything to Humhreys was the close proximity to a semi-decent commissary and BX/PX 😉

Everything aimed at Pyeongtaek is not aimed at Seoul, so there’s that…

But the DeePerk threat is only valid until they use it. And then there won’t be a DeePerk.

It won’t be, as some imagine, a long drawn out war. It’ll be a war of annihilation fueled by hate, vengeance, and modern technology. It will be over quickly once the Nork leaders are assassinated. Longer wars require better planning and logistics than the DeePerk has shown itself capable of providing.

There may not even be ground troops sent to claim land, except for South Koreans to various areas just north of the DMZ for refugee assembly/relief areas and Chinese to doing the same by the Yalu River near Dandong. It’ll be a bloodbath and no one wants to be an “occupying force” dealing with al Qaeda-like IEDs and folks who don’t want to be peaceful…
