Media Report Claims President Trump “Screamed” at National Security Advisor Over THAAD in Korea Comments

It looks like the honeymoon for Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster is over if the media is to be believed:

McMaster’s allies and adversaries inside the White House tell me that Trump is disillusioned with him. This professional military officer has failed to read the president  — by not giving him a chance to ask questions during briefings, at times even lecturing Trump.

Presented with the evidence of this buyer’s remorse, the White House on Sunday evening issued a statement from Trump: “I couldn’t be happier with H.R. He’s doing a terrific job.”

Other White House officials however tell me this is not the sentiment the president has expressed recently in private. Trump was livid, according to three White House officials, after reading in the Wall Street Journal that McMaster had called his South Korean counterpart to assure him that the president’s threat to make that country pay for a new missile defense system was not official policy. These officials say Trump screamed at McMaster on a phone call, accusing him of undercutting efforts to get South Korea to pay its fair share.  [Bloomberg]

You can read more at the link, but who knows what the real story is when this is all sourced from anonymous leaks from officials in the White House probably eager to undercut General McMaster’s influence with President Trump.

I am a US military veteran that has served all over the world to include in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea. I have been blogging about Korea, Northeast Asia, and the US military for over 10 years.

  1. Within the framework of Trump’s established negotiation style, McMaster’s comments were nothing short of sabotage.

This might be solvable with “Hey, aşşhole, stick to military things and leave the financial negotiations to the executive branch negotiators where they belong instead of running your trap outside your field of expertise.”

…but if he undercuts Trump again…

    You’re fired.

  2. Won’t matter anyway. SK will be asking the US to take that shit away now that the new president Moon was elected. Nobody in Korea wanted it other than the US who practically forced it onto South Korea.

  3. LOL. If Moon does that, all foreign investment would be pulled. Well, except for your check from Norkistan…

  4. CH, don’t make big plans based on Bloomberg… Trump trolls the media better than Putin…

  5. Setnaffa,

Trump could be playing a deeper game of some sort here… but likely not.

Having McMaster publicly sabotage negotiations and spreading rumors of screaming matches doesn’t really seem to have a reasonable endgame.

More likely, McMaster just exceeded his limits… the politician in him wanting to assure his counterparts that Trump isn’t really going to bill them a billion dollars… something we all know.

But Trump’s style is to scream one billion and then settle for 100 million. The Koreans snicker how they negotiated a clever deal for a 10th of the asking price. Trump walks away with 100 million nobody thought he could get.

This only works if everyone kinda thinks just maybe Trump really does expect a billion dollars.

  6. Why are you so into late night weirdos and homophobic slurs? Aren’t you one of those “celebrate diversity” guys?

  7. He does kinda look like a leather daddy.

But the real queation is why Trump parted his hair with a straight razor.

  8. There are some questions that still belong under DADT…
