South Korean TV Show Accused of Racism for Skit Using “Blackface”
Via a reader tip comes news of an SBS show under fire for what seems like an annual controversy over the use of “blackface” in South Korea:
In a comedy skit, a character named Hyunhee talks to her family about her dreams of becoming a comedian despite her father’s disapproval, according to Koreaboo.
When she comes to see him, Hyunhee appears in blackface, wearing dreadlocks and what are supposed to be African tribal clothes.
The final scene of the show has the character dancing to the song “Circle of Life” from Disney’s “The Lion King”.
In response, viewers took to social media to express their anger, with many calling the skit racist and how it’s offensive to people of color. [Next Shark]

When the Bubble Sisters did years ago, they said there is no racism in Korea. It’s obvious this is fake news.

The Koreans have been doing this on TV for 30+ years. When I was a watcher of Korean TV they used to call it “Shikomons” or dirty face. It’s always been racist and always will be. Just visit any Korean-run shop in Koreatown in Los Angeles and watch the interaction between blacks and Koreans. At the best it is cold and objective business dealing (What do you want? – Here’s your money. – Thanks you very much. *with a fake smile attached) and at its worst it can break out into fighting.
I think the bigger crime here is that crap their still trying to pass of as comedy. 1915 called, they want their 5h1t back. 🙄
I also still love the hypocrisy in using the term “people of color” when claiming racism.
OTOH, who are we to assume the performer’s race, gender, or intent? The really offensive part was when the haters refused to embrace and celebrate diversity. Well that and not recognizing their cultural misappropriation of English, peaceful protests, and the Internet.
