This is a horrible tragedy for the unit involved in this accident at Ft. Hood. With that said there had to be some serious lack of risk assessment and leadership to allow something like this to happen:

Five soldiers were killed and four were missing after an Army troop carrier was washed from a low-water crossing and overturned Thursday in a rain-swollen creek at Fort Hood, the Texas Army post said.
Three soldiers were found dead shortly after the 2½-ton truck was toppled by the swift current of Owl Creek during a morning training exercise. Two more bodies were found late Thursday night, according to a Fort Hood statement. Three soldiers were rescued and were hospitalized in stable condition.
No further details were provided in the statement, but spokesman Chris Haug said the search continued for the four soldiers who remain missing. Army officials planned a briefing early Friday to provide an update. [Stars & Stripes]

“Officials with Rocky Mountain National Park stated they were notified late Thursday night that a group of 10 military personnel affiliated with Fort Carson were requesting assistance on Kiener’s Route on Longs Peak.
AIRTRACKER7 is above the summit and we can see a group of people, but it has not been confirmed whether they are the personnel who requested assistance.
The group was involved in a climbing training, RMNP officials said in a statement issued at 12:15 p.m.
“A few members reported having some degree of distress and were having difficulty continuing up the route,” according to the statement from RMNP. “The group was not planning to over-night in the area.”
@Tbone, the military personnel climbing Longs Peak were from a Special Forces unit from Ft. Carson so I seriously doubt they are fat and out of shape. Secondly having climbed Longs Peak before that mountain is no joke especially this time of year when there is still a lot of snow on it. That mountain has killed a lot of people over the years. Additionally the route they went up was a more difficult route than the standard Keyhole Route. Kiener’s this time of year requires crampons, ice axe, and rope to be climbed.
Apparently three of them came down with altitude sickness which would have slowed everyone down. The Kiener’s route that they were on cannot support a helicopter rescue and thus why they had to get to the summit first before the sick people could get evacuated. Some really good video of the evacuation from the summit can be seen at this link.

They’re stuck on top of the mountain, how stupid are they? Sounds like some are fat/out of shape so they need park ranger help to get down.
