Picture of the Day: New Smoking Law for Seoul Subway

No smoking within 10 meters from subway entrances

A woman walks past a sign that states that smoking is not allowed within 10 meters from every subway entrance in Seoul from May 1, 2016. Violators will be fined up to 100,000 won (approximately US$88) from Sept. 1 after a four-month guidance period. (Yonhap)

I can see it now- a 100k kw fine or a 50k kw “donation” that eliminates the need for any paperwork, lol.

This should apply to bus stops too. I’ve gagged at bus stops a couple of times when an ajushi decides to light up next to me.

I was walking into Jonggak Station on Thursday night behind a group of older guys, a little drunk. One of them lights up a cigarette and puffs away as he’s walking towards the station. When we get to the top of the steps, he takes a long drag and throws the cigarette behind him. Right into my goddamn face.

I’m really laid back about smokers – I don’t want to smell it, I don’t want to see butts on the ground or the nasty tar spots from hocking all over the place. As long as that’s going on, I don’t care. But this piece of shit… no regard for anyone else. When I swore at him in Korean, he didn’t even care. If this weren’t Korea… and if I were a violent man, of course…

Still, I hope something bites him in the dick.

@3, that’s a sad story. Sorry you had to live it. My worst experience in Korea was being called fat by some dude selling shoes in Namdemun. Not even comparable.

Chairs,

Start taking video.

Take a video of the cigarette on the ground and then take video of him. Make sure he doesn’t notice your plan until you have good video of his face.

Try to hand him the cigarette while saying he dropped it.

In very kind and polite Korean, as you chase him, ask him why he threw trash on the ground. Ask him if he thinks Korea should be a filthy country. Question if he is really Korean or perhaps from some other country secretly trying to make Korea ugly and embarrassing for all true Koreans. Etc.

His reaction will be far less dignified and measured than yours.

Then you share it on the internet.

Don’t bother mentioning how he threw it in your face. Nobody cares that much… but they do care about foreign perception of Korea being dirty and disgusting.

Remember Dog Poop Girl? Cigarette Butt Man has a nice ring.
